hospital before the ambulance.<\/p>\n<p>Emily was thirty-one weeks pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>The doctors stabilized her again.<\/p>\n<p>But this time the conclusion changed.<\/p>\n<p>The pregnancy had become too risky.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Arthur stood beside Emily\u2019s bed while the obstetrician explained that if the bleeding recurred or the fetal monitoring deteriorated, they would deliver.<\/p>\n<p>Emily looked terrified.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur held her hand.<\/p>\n<p>No false promises.<\/p>\n<p>No bargaining.<\/p>\n<p>No demands that medicine give him certainty.<\/p>\n<p>He said only, \u201cI\u2019m here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily squeezed his fingers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>For most of his life, he had confused love with the power to prevent loss.<\/p>\n<p>Now there was nothing to prevent by force.<\/p>\n<p>Only a daughter.<\/p>\n<p>A child not yet born.<\/p>\n<p>A frightening room.<\/p>\n<p>And the choice to
