the height marks on the pantry frame.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s childhood recorded in pencil.<\/p>\n<p>She touched the highest one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHenry got what he wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA son?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She smiled sadly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe just had to become someone different before he could recognize it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur watched her leave.<\/p>\n<p>Then he returned to the kitchen and picked up Henry Bell\u2019s 1999 letter.<\/p>\n<p>He placed it beside Martha\u2019s last letter.<\/p>\n<p>Two parents.<\/p>\n<p>Two confessions.<\/p>\n<p>Both written after fear had already made the decision.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at Emily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need you to promise me something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I start deciding what truth you can handle because I\u2019m afraid of losing you, tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI already do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she added, \u201cBut you have to listen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His smile faded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside, the roses moved beneath the porch light.<\/p>\n<p>The estate was almost closed.<\/p>\n<p>The property questions were nearly resolved.<\/p>\n<p>Yet
