Look at your face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s eyes flashed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy face just found out my mother lied about half her life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean my adoption is some conspiracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t say it was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were thinking it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was thinking I don\u2019t understand why she screamed \u2018you promised me\u2019 while Martha was holding you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur turned toward Evelyn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot certainly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stop looking at me like I\u2019m evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pushed past us and left the room.<\/p>\n<p>His footsteps crossed the attic.<\/p>\n<p>Then descended the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should go after him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive him a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel picked up Martha\u2019s note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know if I can take more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about the code.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel read.<\/p>\n<p>Martha had eventually located an employee who worked records at St. Agnes during 1967 and 1968.<\/p>\n<p>A woman named Margaret Ellis.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret had agreed to speak once, then changed her mind.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, shortly before Margaret\u2019s death, she mailed Martha a single sheet of paper.<\/p>\n<p>We searched the folder.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t here,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn looked around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartha would have kept it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca checked beneath the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>I opened a smaller envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur returned before we found it.<\/p>\n<p>His face was calmer but pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t owe me an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI snapped at you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said that\u2019s different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur reentered the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are we looking for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel explained.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur immediately went to the desk.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled out the lower drawer.<\/p>\n<p>Empty.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Inside lay a single envelope.<\/p>\n<p>MARGARET ELLIS.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur placed it on the desk.<\/p>\n<p>He opened it.<\/p>\n<p>The document inside was not a letter.<\/p>\n<p>It was a photocopied page from a ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Two columns had been highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>Anna Lane.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Lane \u2014 female infant, January 1968.<\/p>\n<p>We all exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>Separate entries.<\/p>\n<p>Then Arthur looked lower.<\/p>\n<p>Seven months later.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown female.<\/p>\n<p>Male infant.<\/p>\n<p>R-14.<\/p>\n<p>Transfer approved by H. Price.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does \u2018unknown female\u2019 mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly the birth mother was not recorded on this copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca pointed to a handwritten notation in the margin.<\/p>\n<p>The ink was faded but readable.<\/p>\n<p>Substitution authorized \u2014 family request.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stared at the words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat substitution?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned the page over.<\/p>\n<p>Something had been written on the back.<\/p>\n<p>Martha\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>One sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret told me R-14 was not a room.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>He read the next line.<\/p>\n<p>It meant related placement.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca gripped the desk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRelated to whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>There was one final note.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret believed the infant placed with us was connected by blood to Anna Lane.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s face emptied.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca whispered, \u201cArthur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She did not move toward him.<\/p>\n<p>Neither did I.<\/p>\n<p>For once, everyone understood that the kindest thing was not to close the distance.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stared at Martha\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Then at Anna\u2019s photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, he said the question none of us wanted to answer without proof.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Anna was connected to my birth, what exactly was I to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31646\">Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Arthur Agreed to Search Martha\u2019s Records for the Truth, but the First Confirmed Fact Made Rebecca Step Away From Him<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For several seconds, nobody entered the room.
