Then she noticed. Then I got angry because she noticed before I fixed it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s face softened slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen she revoked the power of attorney, I felt humiliated. So I told myself she was becoming paranoid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His laugh was bitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was easier than saying she was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Martha writing that she wanted him to become a man who made a different choice next time.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that process had already started.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur nodded toward the box.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe full amount is there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCash?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. Records. I sold a piece of equipment and transferred eighteen-six back to the estate account yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn\u2019s expression shifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou repaid everything?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith interest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked irritated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked the bank to calculate what the money would have earned in her savings account. I could have told myself she was bitter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His fingers flattened over the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she wrote that she loved me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s gaze lowered.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked toward her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid your letter say that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Martha loved you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently she was determined to make that as inconvenient as possible for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A fragile smile crossed Rebecca\u2019s face.<\/p>\n<p>Then Evelyn returned to the matter that had brought us together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is another provision we need to discuss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me guess. Mom left the courthouse to Clara\u2019s mailman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public library?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer mechanic?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left the parcel behind the house jointly to Rebecca and you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s humor vanished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re the other beneficiary?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neither appeared pleased.<\/p>\n<p>I looked from one to the other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy the parcel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn opened a folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartha included instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course she did,\u201d Arthur said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe land cannot be sold for five years unless both beneficiaries agree and a specific alternative condition is met.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat condition?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Arthur and Rebecca jointly decide they cannot use the property for the purpose Martha preferred, they may sell it, but half the proceeds must go to the community project established at the house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe project Mom wants Clara to run?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe built an escape hatch that still pays the project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was thorough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was her preferred use for the land?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn looked at Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA garden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s eyebrows rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA garden?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot simply ornamental. Martha envisioned raised beds, shaded seating, a small greenhouse, and plots available to older residents and neighborhood families.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother hated vegetables.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe grew tomatoes every summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe hated eating them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat explains why she gave me so many.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca laughed.<\/p>\n<p>This time Arthur did too.<\/p>\n<p>It lasted only a moment.<\/p>\n<p>But it mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Then Rebecca noticed something in the paperwork.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn folded her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartha explained that separately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She produced two envelopes.<\/p>\n<p>One for want to do with it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn closed the folder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not need a decision today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinally, legal advice I like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then a sound came from the hallway.<\/p>\n<p>The front door opened.<\/p>\n<p>All four of us jacket.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped when he saw us.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved immediately to Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca shot to her feet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man lifted one hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou weren\u2019t answering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you I was coming to see Evelyn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t say where.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my son, Daniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked from Daniel to Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel\u2019s attention shifted toward the photograph on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Then toward Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>Something strange passed across his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Before she could answer, Daniel reached into his jacket pocket.<\/p>\n<p>He removed an old envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found this in Grandma Anna\u2019s box after you left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca
