She knew employees depended on him. She knew he had convinced himself that moving money from her account was temporary.<\/p>\n<p>But knowing why he had done something did not make the choice hers.<\/p>\n<p>When she confronted him, he had called the transfers loans.<\/p>\n<p>She reminded him that a loan required the lender to agree.<\/p>\n<p>When she revoked his authority, he told her she was becoming suspicious because of age.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence made Arthur stop again.<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t mean it the way she took it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did you mean it?\u201d Mr. Brooks asked.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked up.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer\u2019s question was not hostile.<\/p>\n<p>That seemed to unsettle him more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo was she.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was under pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo was she.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur folded the page partly closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re supposed to be representing me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am. Representation doesn\u2019t require me to tell you that every decision you made was defensible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked away.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer waited.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually Arthur reopened the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Near the end, Martha told him something I had heard from her in different forms over the years: love did not entitle one person to erase another person\u2019s boundaries.<\/p>\n<p>She had not changed her will because she stopped loving Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>She changed it because she needed him to understand that love and ownership were not the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>The last lines were the hardest.<\/p>\n<p>She asked him not to spend the rest of his life proving that what he had done was reasonable.<\/p>\n<p>She asked him to become someone who would make a different choice next time.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur finished.<\/p>\n<p>No one spoke.<\/p>\n<p>A gust of wind lifted the corner of the funeral flowers across the yard.<\/p>\n<p>Their plastic wrapping made a dry rattling sound.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stared at his mother\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew exactly what I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Mr. Brooks said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe records indicate she discovered the transfers in 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur pressed his thumb against his forehead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought she forgot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sentence chilled me.<\/p>\n<p>He heard it too.<\/p>\n<p>His head came up quickly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat came out wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, after a while she stopped mentioning it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartha didn\u2019t forget much,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur gave a small, bitter laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe forgot where she put her glasses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone forgets where they put their glasses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe once put them in the refrigerator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was looking for butter while talking to me on the phone. She set them down beside the milk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew about that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe called me because she couldn\u2019t find them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something shifted in his expression.<\/p>\n<p>It was not jealousy exactly.<\/p>\n<p>It was the realization that his mother had possessed an entire ordinary life beyond the version of her he encountered during calls and occasional visits.<\/p>\n<p>I knew where she misplaced her glasses.<\/p>\n<p>I knew which storms frightened her.<\/p>\n<p>I knew the television volume had to be exactly eighteen because seventeen was too quiet and nineteen was \u201cbroadcasting to Maryland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew she disliked people cutting sandwiches diagonally.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur knew things I never would.<\/p>\n<p>He had known her as a young mother.<\/p>\n<p>He knew the sound of her voice before age roughened it.<\/p>\n<p>He knew the meals she cooked when money was short and the songs she sang in the car.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of us possessed the whole woman.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that was the tragedy.<\/p>\n<p>We had each known different Marthas.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked across the yard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks placed the documents back into the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat depends on what you mean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t reviewed the executed will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you\u2019ve read the supporting documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan I challenge it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can challenge almost anything if you\u2019re willing to pay somebody long enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked irritated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m asking whether I can win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on what I\u2019ve seen here, a claim that Martha lacked capacity would be difficult. A claim that Mrs. Jenkins exercised undue influence would also face significant problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause of this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your mother anticipated it, obtained an independent evaluation, used separate counsel, documented her reasoning, and apparently took considerable care to ensure Mrs. Jenkins wasn\u2019t involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you know who her lawyer was?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you drive her there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she ever talk about changing the will?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He searched my face for several seconds.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I think he believed me.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is also the issue of the eighteen thousand six hundred dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s shoulders sank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe estate may have a claim against you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy own mother would sue me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother cannot sue anyone now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur flinched.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks softened his tone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut her estate can seek repayment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to walk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He crossed my yard and stopped beside Martha\u2019s roses.<\/p>\n<p>They had grown untidily that year. She had been too weak by summer to prune them herself, and when I offered, she slapped my wrist with her gardening glove.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cut roses like someone trimming electrical wire,\u201d she told me.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur touched one bare branch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe loved these.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father planted them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His hand fell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe hated gardening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartha said that was why the roses meant so much. He spent three weekends learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then it vanished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe talked to you about Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe never talked to me about him after he died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe she thought it hurt you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stared at the thorny stems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was Mom. She could protect you so thoroughly you didn\u2019t know there was anything to be protected from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the first thing he had said all morning that sounded like love rather than defense.<\/p>\n<p>I joined him near the garden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did not look at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His shoulders tensed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartha once said you weren\u2019t the only child she failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked what she meant. She wouldn\u2019t explain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother had one child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m that child.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why would she say that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur searched my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly what did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I repeated it as closely as I could.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she ever mention adoption?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA pregnancy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone from Dad\u2019s family?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks had come down from the porch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas the statement connected with the estate?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould she have been speaking figuratively?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur gave a frustrated breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was a teacher for thirty-two years. She called half her students \u2018my children.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was true.<\/p>\n<p>Martha had taught elementary school before becoming a guidance counselor. Former students still occasionally stopped her in grocery-store aisles.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the mystery was no mystery.<\/p>\n<p>Yet I remembered her face when she said it.<\/p>\n<p>Not sentimental.<\/p>\n<p>Guilty.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur returned to the porch and handed the letter to Mr. Brooks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want copies of everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll get them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I want to know what\u2019s in the will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat will come through the estate process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at me again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you expect when you paid those bills?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The question was quieter now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has to have been something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople don\u2019t do things for no reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward Martha\u2019s front door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix years ago, I saw a shutoff notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was embarrassed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I knew what that felt like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur waited.<\/p>\n<p>I had not planned to tell him this.<\/p>\n<p>But grief had already stripped the morning of privacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen my husband died, I had bills I couldn\u2019t pay for a while. People offered help in ways that made me feel like a project. I hated it. I remembered that when I saw Martha\u2019s notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s anger softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were married?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor twenty-eight years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo reason you would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The apology hung between us awkwardly, but honestly.<\/p>\n<p>I continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty-nine dollars wasn\u2019t much to me by then. To Martha it was one fewer reason to worry. I didn\u2019t want gratitude. I didn\u2019t want her to owe me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked down at the statement in his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A laugh escaped me unexpectedly.<\/p>\n<p>It was small and painful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe let me think I was clever for six years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur almost smiled again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds like her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This time the smile stayed for two seconds.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mr. Brooks\u2019s phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>He checked the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExcuse me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stepped toward the sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur and I remained beside each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really did love her,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t have to say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t if I didn\u2019t believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just thought there would be time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo fix everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was nothing useful to say.<\/p>\n<p>People often imagine regret as dramatic. Mostly it is a person standing in ordinary daylight realizing that an opportunity disappeared while they were busy postponing it.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was Evelyn Roth\u2019s office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur straightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe will is scheduled for formal review.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNext week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Jenkins, Mrs. Roth specifically requested that you attend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wouldn\u2019t say over the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s expression closed again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed both hands over his face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks put the envelope into his portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We both looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe documents Martha left contain an instruction concerning a second sealed letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart thudded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo whom?\u201d Arthur asked.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks checked the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know anything about another letter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently Mrs. Roth has it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks closed the portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe won\u2019t know until she gives it to Clara.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked toward his mother\u2019s house again.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said something so quietly I almost missed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat else did you leave behind, Mom?\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31641\">Click here to continue reading: PART 4: Two Weeks After Arthur Accused Me of Taking Advantage of Martha, Her Estate Attorney Told Me What I Had Inherited<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arthur\u2019s voice was unsteady when he began.
