Which is why you should answer accurately before I discover that your answers conflict with written records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had never seen Arthur so still.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, I had known him mostly through Martha.<\/p>\n<p>He lived nearly three hours away in Alexandria. For years he had visited at Christmas, sometimes at Easter, occasionally in summer. His arrivals were noticeable because he drove expensive vehicles that looked strangely oversized beside Martha\u2019s aging brick house.<\/p>\n<p>Martha rarely complained about him.<\/p>\n<p>That should not be confused with praising him.<\/p>\n<p>She simply protected him from conversation.<\/p>\n<p>If I asked whether Arthur was coming for Thanksgiving, she might say, \u201cHe has work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If I asked whether he had called, she would say, \u201cHe is busy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Busy was one of Martha\u2019s gentlest words.<\/p>\n<p>It could cover almost anything.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks continued reading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis says your authorization was revoked in August 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom wanted to handle things herself again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t the reason listed here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does it say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks studied him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt says Martha discovered transactions she had not authorized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s mouth tightened.<\/p>\n<p>I felt suddenly intrusive.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever had happened between Martha and her son belonged to them. Yet Martha had deliberately placed the evidence in my hands, knowing I might one day stand exactly where I was standing now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat transactions?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur turned on me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis doesn\u2019t concern you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou came here accusing me of taking advantage of her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said I had questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou accused me before your lawyer finished introducing himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks raised a hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He pulled several bank statements from the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Some sections had been highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have transfers totaling eighteen thousand six hundred dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s shoulders stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe destination appears to be Northline Renovations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks looked up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s your company, correct?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s face had gone gray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks asked, \u201cDid Martha authorize those transfers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were loans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere are the agreements?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere weren\u2019t formal agreements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmails?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTexts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChecks marked as loans?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny record showing your mother agreed before the money was transferred?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur shoved both hands into his coat pockets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew my business was struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again Mr. Brooks waited.<\/p>\n<p>It was remarkable how much pressure silence could create.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur finally said, \u201cI was going to repay her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I asked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m telling you what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. You\u2019re telling me what you intended afterward. I\u2019m asking what Martha authorized beforehand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked at the floorboards.<\/p>\n<p>I knew the answer before he spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe would have helped me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks\u2019s voice remained level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she say that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat still isn\u2019t an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked up sharply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t understand our relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen help me understand it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>A truck passed at the end of the street, its tires hissing over damp pavement.<\/p>\n<p>I thought of Martha counting exact change at the grocery store.<\/p>\n<p>Martha rinsing aluminum foil so she could use it twice.<\/p>\n<p>Martha refusing to replace her kitchen toaster because only one side had stopped working.<\/p>\n<p>Eighteen thousand six hundred dollars.<\/p>\n<p>And I had worried about embarrassing her over twenty-nine.<\/p>\n<p>Something must have shown on my face.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t look at me like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not doing anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re judging me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m remembering things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat things?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first answer that came to me was Martha\u2019s winter coat.<\/p>\n<p>Two years earlier, its lining had torn beneath one sleeve. I offered to drive her to buy another.<\/p>\n<p>She said the coat was perfectly good.<\/p>\n<p>Later I saw her sewing the lining herself beneath the kitchen light.<\/p>\n<p>Had she been saving money because Arthur had taken hers?<\/p>\n<p>I did not ask.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks returned to the documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s also a letter from the attorney who prepared Martha\u2019s revised estate plan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvelyn Roth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know of her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks read silently.<\/p>\n<p>Then he exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer looked at Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother anticipated a capacity challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur laughed once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat proves my point. Somebody put the idea in her head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe had an independent medical evaluation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The laughter stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to this, Martha requested an assessment before executing the revised documents. The physician concluded that she understood her property, her family relationships, the nature of the changes she was making, and their consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoctors miss things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe also met Mrs. Roth without beneficiaries present.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat beneficiaries?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat beneficiaries?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not your mother\u2019s estate attorney. I don\u2019t have the will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you\u2019ve seen enough to know something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen enough to tell you that the theory you brought me this morning has a serious problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur pointed at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe paid Mom\u2019s bills secretly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne utility bill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor six years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that doesn\u2019t look suspicious?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot in the way you hoped it would twenty minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur flinched.<\/p>\n<p>I almost felt sorry for him.<\/p>\n<p>Almost.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered Martha\u2019s orange notice.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks rearranged the papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is another document.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He removed a smaller envelope from inside the first.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur recognized the handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs that for me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGive it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur, before you read this, I need to know whether there is anything else you haven\u2019t told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother\u2019s finances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny additional transfers?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny attempt to sell or mortgage her property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny disagreement concerning her competency?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s eyes shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks saw it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo there was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was it like?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur paced to the porch steps and back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe started refusing my help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter she revoked the authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat help?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything. Bills. Repairs. Taxes. She wouldn\u2019t let me organize anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you suggest she was incapable of managing those matters?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said she was getting older.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I heard myself say, \u201cShe hated that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing spoken to as though age had made her stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think you knew her better than I did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I listened when she spoke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face reddened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were her neighbor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was her son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen stay out of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nearly answered, but another memory stopped me.<\/p>\n<p>It was Martha at my kitchen table months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Rain had tapped against the windows that evening. She had arrived carrying a small tin of cookies and had remained after the tea was gone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Arthur is angry with me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>I had been wiping the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I stopped being useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She turned her empty teacup slowly between both hands.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, she told me about the transfers.<\/p>\n<p>Not every detail.<\/p>\n<p>Enough.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s business had begun failing. His calls changed. At first he asked for advice. Then he asked about her savings. Then the house. Then what she planned to do with the house after she died.<\/p>\n<p>After her surgery, when he had temporary access to her accounts, money moved.<\/p>\n<p>Martha discovered it months later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you confront him?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did he say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat he was protecting the business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t the same as asking permission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he repay you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you report it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gave me a look I never forgot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is my son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t answer the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt answers every question a mother is afraid to answer honestly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had reached across the table.<\/p>\n<p>She moved her hand away\u2014not rejecting me, exactly, but preserving the little space in which she could still control herself.<\/p>\n<p>So I let my hand rest beside hers.<\/p>\n<p>After a while she said something stranger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur isn\u2019t the only child I failed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought I had misunderstood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArthur has a sibling?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward the rain-darkened window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot exactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martha stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That day never came.<\/p>\n<p>Now Mr. Brooks held the letter addressed to Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want to read this here?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur glanced at me.<\/p>\n<p>I expected him to say no.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he held out his hand.<\/p>\n<p>The lawyer gave him the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur broke the seal.<\/p>\n<p>His mother\u2019s handwriting filled the page.<\/p>\n<p>He read the first lines silently.<\/p>\n<p>His mouth opened slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Then closed.<\/p>\n<p>I could see his eyes moving faster.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway down, they stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked before I could stop myself.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur ignored me.<\/p>\n<p>He read the same section again.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked at Mr. Brooks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s fingers tightened around the paper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did she know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of it, apparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur sat down on my porch step.<\/p>\n<p>The anger had gone out of him.<\/p>\n<p>What remained looked much older.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Brooks gathered the bank statements.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stared at the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother thought I was stealing from her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one answered.<\/p>\n<p>He shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t stealing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still no answer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going to pay it back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice cracked on the final word.<\/p>\n<p>I watched him struggle between defending himself and believing the woman who had written the page in his hands.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Arthur looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did she tell you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout the money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I considered lying.<\/p>\n<p>Martha was dead. Arthur was grieving.
