normal.”

“You slouch.”

“You’re shrinking.”

They argued about it in the parking lot outside the auditorium while Anna pretended not to listen.

I stood several feet away beside David.

For once, the sight of Travis inside a family moment did not pull me backward.

It simply belonged to Noah.

That was one of the quieter changes time brought.

Events stopped arranging themselves around what happened to me.

A graduation could be a graduation.

A birthday could be a birthday.

A workshop class could be about tools.

Not every room containing Travis had to become part of our old story.

Noah had graduated near the top third of his class, which he described as “strategically respectable.”

He planned to attend the community college first and study industrial technology.

Everyone assumed I influenced that.

I had not.

Neither had Travis, according to Anna.

Noah liked machines.

Sometimes children inherit interests without inheriting destinies.

The auditorium smelled of flowers, perfume and overheated electronics.

Families carried balloons large enough to obstruct entire rows.

Someone behind us had brought an air horn despite explicit instructions.

When Noah’s name was called, Anna cried.

Travis shouted.

Brooke stood.

David applauded.

I did all four internally and only one externally.

Afterward, Noah found us outside.

His gown was already half unzipped.

The cap sat crooked.

“I survived.”

“Barely,” I said.

He hugged me.

That still surprised me sometimes.

Not because affection between us felt unnatural.

Because nothing in the beginning suggested this would become one of the relationships I kept.

“You coming Sunday?”

“What’s Sunday?”

“My party.”

“You invited me.”

“Yes.”

“Then why ask?”

“Because adults say things and cancel.”

I looked at Travis.

He looked away, smiling.

“I’ll be there.”

The party was at Anna’s house.

Not mine.

Not Travis’s.

That mattered less than it once would have.

Anna’s backyard held folding tables, barbecue trays and a rented canopy threatening to blow away in the Louisiana heat.

Photographs of Noah covered one table.

Baby.

Kindergarten.

Missing front teeth.

Fishing.

Baseball.

Workshop.

One photograph showed him standing between Travis and me at the elementary-school history night.

I stared at it longer than expected.

He was so small.

We looked uncomfortable.

All of us trying to stand correctly inside a family arrangement nobody had designed.

Now the same people moved around the backyard without instructions.

Brooke carried drinks.

David argued with Travis over grilling temperature.

Anna’s cousins set up a speaker.

Evelyn arrived with a graduation card and announced that college students needed cash more than advice.

Denise appeared carrying a cake decorated with a spreadsheet grid.

I refused to ask.

“It says his projected income.”

“That is horrifying.”

“It’s life.

Some knew everything.

Some knew almost nothing.

Nobody needed the complete map.

I had spent years believing safety required total understanding.

Life eventually taught me that healthy relationships often function with partial knowledge.

David did not know every detail of Carol’s involvement.

Noah did not know everything Travis once said about leaving.

Evelyn did not know about my miscarriages.

Maya did not know the contents of Daddy’s letters.

They did not need to.

Privacy and secrecy were not the same.

One protected dignity.

The other manipulated reality.

The difference was consent.

Always consent.

Noah opened gifts after lunch.

Tools.

Books.

Money.

A ridiculous dorm-sized refrigerator even though he planned to commute.

Then Travis handed him a small wooden box.

Noah looked suspicious.

“This isn’t emotional, is it?”

“Open it.”

Inside lay a set of old combination wrenches.

I recognized them immediately.

Daddy’s.

My stomach tightened.

I looked at Travis.

He noticed.

“They’re not from the workshop.”

I knew that.

Daddy had kept two sets.

One disappeared years before.

“These were in my things,” Travis said.

Noah looked between us.

“What’s happening?”

I picked up one wrench.

R.P. had been scratched into the handle.

Daddy marked tools because neighbors borrowed them and forgot.

“Your dad had these for a long time.”

Travis nodded.

“I took them before Raymond died.”

The backyard noise seemed to fade.

Not theft connected to fraud.

Just tools.

Still.

“You took them?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Travis looked embarrassed.

“He told me not to use his good set after I left one in the rain.”

Despite myself, I laughed.

That sounded exactly like Daddy.

“So you stole the backup?”

“Yes.”

“Excellent problem-solving.”

“I was twenty-eight.”

“We have established twenty-eight is adulthood.”

Noah held up a wrench.

“Am I allowed to keep these?”

The question broke something open in me.

Not because of the tools.

Because he asked.

Permission.

I looked at Travis.

He did too.

“These belonged to Raymond,” Travis said. “June decides.”

Correct.

I thought about Daddy.

Would he want his tools given to the child Travis hid?

Impossible question.

Daddy never knew Noah.

Never knew the future.

Never knew what any of us would become.

Then I asked the better question.

Was the choice mine?

Yes.

I placed the wrench back in the box.

“They’re yours.”

Noah smiled.

“Really?”

“Use them.”

“I will.”

“And if you leave one in the rain, I will haunt you on Daddy’s behalf.”

“You’re not dead.”

“I’ll improvise.”

Everyone laughed.

Travis looked at me.

“Thank you.”

I nodded.

No ceremony.

No symbolic absolution.

Just tools moving to someone who would use them.

Later, while people ate cake, I found Travis alone near the side fence.

He looked toward Noah, who was showing the wrenches to David.

“I should have returned those years ago.”

“Yes.”

“I forgot about them.”

“I believe you.”

He looked at me.

“You believe me a lot more now.”

“In specific categories.”

He smiled.

“Still fair.”

I leaned against the fence.

“Why give them to Noah instead of me?”

“I was going to ask first.”

“Were you?”

“Yes.”

He paused.

“Then I thought if I asked you privately, you might say no because of me.”

“That’s possible.”

“But if I gave them to him in front of you, that could pressure you.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“You noticed that after doing it?”

His face changed.

“Damn.”

I laughed.

“Progress, not perfection.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I should’ve asked first.”

“Yes.”

“Do you want them back?”

“No.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

The important part was not that he made the social mistake.

The important part was that he recognized pressure when I pointed to it.

Old Travis would have argued intention.

Newer Travis considered impact.

People could change.

Inconsistently.

Slowly.

Still change.

A little later, Brooke came beside me holding two pieces of cake.

“One is yours.”

“Which?”

“The smaller party.

Carol’s absence sat quietly inside it.

Brooke mentioned her first.

“Mom would have loved this.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“She would’ve made it about herself.”

“Yes.”

We laughed.

Grief became easier once people stopped editing the dead.

Carol had loved Noah.

Carol had lied.

Carol had participated in fraud.

Carol had protected Travis destructively.

Carol had regretted it.

All true.

No requirement to choose one.

Brooke handed me the fork.

“You ever think about how weird this uses that phrase.”

“It was accurate.”

“What are we?”

I considered.

“People who kept showing up.”

She nodded.

“That works.”

By late afternoon, guests began leaving.

David helped fold tables.

Travis loaded chairs into a rental trailer.

Anna sorted leftover food.

I picked up discarded cups.

Normal cleanup.

No emotional climax.

Exactly right.

Then Noah called me from the porch.

“Miss June?”

“Yes?”

“Come here.”

He stood beside a folding chair with an envelope.

“Another gift?”

“No.”

He looked suddenly serious.

“This was in Dad’s card.”

I looked at Travis across the yard.

He saw the envelope and started walking over.

“What is it?” I asked.

Noah handed it to me.

My name was written on the front.

June.

Travis arrived.

“I told him to give it to you later.”

“Later when?”

“When you were leaving.”

Noah shrugged.

“I forgot.”

Fair.

I opened it.

Inside was a photocopy of an old photograph.

Daddy.

Standing in the workshop.

Travis beside him.

Both holding boards.

I had never seen it.

On the back,
