genre.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I told him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe won\u2019t say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooke If I got part, I won. If I used it for business, that counted as me building something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I think I was terrified of depending on anything that could be taken away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t explain stealing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Good.<\/p>\n<p>Explanation without excuse.<\/p>\n<p>That distinction had taken all of us years.<\/p>\n<p>He told me something about his father I had never known.<\/p>\n<p>Travis\u2019s father lost a business when Travis was fourteen.<\/p>\n<p>Debt collectors called the house.<\/p>\n<p>They moved twice.<\/p>\n<p>Carol became obsessed with security afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Money.<\/p>\n<p>Property.<\/p>\n<p>Ownership.<\/p>\n<p>No surprises.<\/p>\n<p>I listened.<\/p>\n<p>Not because it absolved anything.<\/p>\n<p>Because history explains patterns.<\/p>\n<p>It does not erase agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad used to say if you don\u2019t own it, someone sometimes.<\/p>\n<p>Repaired things.<\/p>\n<p>Made memories.<\/p>\n<p>None of those required ownership.<\/p>\n<p>He could have contributed without possessing.<\/p>\n<p>That had always been possible.<\/p>\n<p>He simply had not believed it.<\/p>\n<p>Forty minutes passed.<\/p>\n<p>Then Travis asked, \u201cCan I ask you one personal question?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can performance.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes.<\/p>\n<p>He told me he lived in a one-bedroom apartment near his job.<\/p>\n<p>Saw Noah every other weekend under Anna\u2019s agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Was rebuilding his relationship with Brooke.<\/p>\n<p>Did not speak much with Lindsay.<\/p>\n<p>Had started volunteering through a reentry program teaching basic maintenance skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUseful?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>We were running out of time.<\/p>\n<p>I checked the clock.<\/p>\n<p>He noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne key envelope.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment, I thought he would leave it on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he tore it in half.<\/p>\n<p>Then again.<\/p>\n<p>Dropped the pieces into the trash beside the condiment station.<\/p>\n<p>I watched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy therapist would call it intentional closure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour therapist sounds expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He smiled.<\/p>\n<p>At the door, we parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>Different cars.<\/p>\n<p>Different directions.<\/p>\n<p>For perhaps a minute, I watched his truck pull toward the highway.<\/p>\n<p>Then I started mine.<\/p>\n<p>Halfway home, I realized something.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent an hour with Travis without feeling smaller.<\/p>\n<p>Without preparing defenses.<\/p>\n<p>Without watching his hands near documents.<\/p>\n<p>Without calculating whether kindness meant danger.<\/p>\n<p>That did not mean I trusted him.<\/p>\n<p>It meant I trusted myself.<\/p>\n<p>The distinction was enormous.<\/p>\n<p>At home, I walked to
