23 – Travis’s Release Date Moved Closer, and the Question of Whether He Could Return to the Property Reached Me Before He Did

The notice came eighteen months later.

Travis would be eligible for supervised release earlier than originally expected after receiving credit for time served, program participation and other adjustments I did not fully understand.

Rebecca explained the details.

I listened.

Then asked the only question that mattered to me.

“Can he come here?”

“Not without your permission.”

“Good.”

“There may also be supervision conditions limiting contact depending on the final order.”

“Better.”

She paused.

“June, are you afraid of him?”

The answer required thought.

“No.”

“Then why did you ask first?”

“Because not being afraid doesn’t mean I want him on my porch.”

Rebecca smiled.

“Fair.”

The release date was still months away.

I tried not to think about it.

That failed.

Not because I expected Travis to hurt me.

He had never been physically violent.

The fear was subtler.

I worried that seeing him outside prison would make the past feel present again.

A body on the porch.

A familiar truck.

His voice inside Daddy’s kitchen.

The nervous system does not always respect legal closure.

Dr. Ward asked what I wanted.

“I want him to live somewhere else.”

“Excellent start.”

“I want him to have a relationship with Noah if it’s healthy.”

“That belongs mostly to Anna.”

“I know.”

“I notice you added it anyway.”

I sighed.

“Occupational habit.”

“What occupation?”

“Managing consequences of Travis.”

She smiled.

“Perhaps retire.”

I was trying.

Travis planned to relocate to Texas after release.

Brooke told me, not because she felt obligated, but because she thought knowing might reduce uncertainty.

He had found possible work through a reentry program.

Nothing involving financial management.

Good.

He intended to live near Houston.

Closer to Brooke.

Closer to Noah than prison.

Farther from me.

Also good.

Then his supervision officer contacted me.

Not Travis.

The officer wanted to confirm boundaries around contact and property access.

I answered clearly.

No unannounced contact.

No entry onto my property.

Any necessary legal communication through counsel for the immediate future.

No restriction on appropriate contact with Noah merely because Noah sometimes visited me, but visits here should not overlap.

The officer repeated each condition.

For years, Travis had created private rules I did not know existed.

Now boundaries were written.

Mutual.

Visible.

Specific.

The difference mattered.

Noah knew his father might come home soon.

He became restless.

Excited one day.

Angry the next.

Anna told me he had started asking whether Travis could live with them.

The answer was no.

That hurt him.

He asked Brooke.

Also no.

Then, predictably, he asked me.

“Could Dad live in your old extra room?”

I nearly choked on iced tea.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he and I are divorced.”

“So?”

“So divorced people generally do not move back into each other’s houses.”

He considered this.

“Some do.”

“Not these.”

He sighed dramatically.

“Adults make everything complicated.”

“Your father and I certainly tried.”

He did not understand the joke.

Good.

There are jokes children should not have to understand.

I worried Noah might interpret my boundary as rejection of him.

So I told him directly.

“You being welcome here does not mean your dad is welcome here, and your dad not being welcome here does not mean you aren’t.”

He frowned.

“That’s weird.”

“It can be.”

“But okay.”

“Yes.”

He returned to his sandwich.

Children sometimes need less emotional architecture than adults build around them.

Clear sentence.

Reliable behavior.

Repeat as necessary.

The first direct communication from Travis came through Rebecca.

A short note.

I understand June does not want direct contact after release. I will respect that. I would like permission at some point to visit Raymond’s grave.

I stared.

Daddy was buried in a public cemetery.

Travis did not need my permission.

“He knows that,” Rebecca said.

“Then why ask?”

“Maybe he thinks he does.”

“Or maybe he wants an answer.”

“Possible.”

I wrote none.

Rebecca informed his attorney that the cemetery was public and no permission from me was necessary.

That was enough.

Two months before release, Travis transferred the remainder of his voluntary restitution allocation.

Another substantial amount.

No letter.

Good.

The payments reduced what he owed me but did not erase everything.

I had stopped expecting full recovery.

Enough.

The word again.

Then something strange happened.

I began dreaming about our marriage.

Not the fraud.

Ordinary scenes.

Travis making coffee.

Driving to the hardware store.

Watching weather reports during hurricane season.

Standing barefoot in the kitchen eating leftovers.

I woke sad.

That surprised me.

Dr. Ward did not seem surprised.

“You’re approaching a transition.”

“He’s leaving prison, not coming home.”

“Your body may still register his return to ordinary life as significant.”

“I don’t want him back.”

“I didn’t say you did.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Annoying woman.

The dreams continued.

One involved Daddy and Travis repairing the workshop roof together.

That had actually happened.

I stood below handing up screws.

Daddy complained Travis used too much sealant.

Travis told him there was no such thing.

They argued for twenty minutes.

I woke laughing.

Then cried.

The grief was not for the marriage I had.

It was for the marriage I once believed I had.

That distinction took years to understand.

False understanding can still produce real attachment.

The coffee happened.

The roof repair happened.

The laughter happened.

The hidden accounts happened too.

I did not need to choose which category made the other disappear.

Release approached.

Brooke grew nervous.

“He keeps saying he wants to apologize to everybody in person.”

“Tell him that sounds exhausting.”

She laughed.

“I did.”

“How’d he take it?”

“Better than old Travis would have.”

“That’s something.”

“He asked whether you would ever speak to him again.”

“What did you say?”

“That it wasn’t my question to answer.”

I smiled.

“Look at you.”

“I learn slowly.”

“Apparently that runs in the extended family.”

She laughed harder than the joke deserved.

Our relationship had become one of the unexpected things I kept.

Brooke was not my sister-in-law anymore.

Technically, perhaps she never really had been in any meaningful family sense because Travis hid her.

But she was my friend.

No legal category required.

Anna became something different.

Not exactly friend.

Not merely the woman who had an affair with my husband.

We shared concern for Noah and an unusual history neither of us would have chosen.

Sometimes that was enough.

Melissa moved to Dallas.

We exchanged occasional messages.

No friendship.

No hostility.

She sent a contribution to Daddy’s scholarship fund once.

I accepted it.

Derek rebuilt his business.

Evelyn occasionally mailed Christmas cards.

Denise still worked at the parish office.

Lives separated after collision.

That seemed natural.

Then, three weeks before Travis’s release, I received a package.

Correctional facility return address.

I nearly handed it unopened to Rebecca.

Instead, I checked the contents listed on the approved-mail notice.

Documents.

No personal letter indicated.

I opened it.

Inside was a folder.

On the front, Travis had written:

JUNE — THINGS I NEVER RETURNED.

My chest tightened.

The folder contained no money.

No new accounts.

No shocking legal documents.

Personal items.

A copy of Daddy’s old fishing license.

My mother Elaine’s handwritten recipe card for cornbread.

A photograph of me at sixteen beside Daddy’s truck.

An elementary-school report card.

A receipt for the first savings deposit Daddy made in my name.

Small things.

Travis had apparently removed them from estate files years ago.

Why?

Some had been used for identity information.

Others probably got swept into boxes.

Maybe he kept them intentionally.

Maybe not.

At the bottom was one page.

Not a letter exactly.

An inventory.

Item.

Where found.

Why retained, when he remembered.

The fishing license: copied for signature reference.

The savings receipt: used to identify bank relationship.

The report card: contained Social Security information on an old school form.

The photograph: no reason.

Next to that, Travis wrote:

I liked it.

I stared at those three words.

The photograph showed me sunburned, skinny and laughing while Daddy pretended to be annoyed.

Travis had kept it because he liked it.

Again, complexity.

A thief can treasure a photograph of the person he steals from.

A liar can love.

A person can feel tenderness and still violate boundaries.

That contradiction no longer needed solving.

The final line on the inventory read:

These were yours before me. They should be yours after me.

I sat at the table for a long time.

Then I placed the items with my family records.

The inventory went into the legal-history cabinet.

Not framed.

Not destroyed.

Filed.

Appropriate place.

Travis was released on a rainy Monday morning.

I knew because Brooke texted:

He’s out. Heading to Houston. Everything calm.

I replied:

Good.

Then I put my phone down.

No dramatic feeling arrived.

I went grocery shopping.

Bought berries without checking the account balance first.

At home, I paid the electric bill.

Answered an email about the scholarship fund.

Walked to the workshop.

The world did not change because Travis was outside prison walls.

That realization felt almost disappointing.

Then deeply comforting.

Three days later, Anna called.

“He saw Noah.”

“How did it go?”

“Complicated.”

“Meaning?”

“Noah hugged him, then got angry, then hugged him again.”

“Sounds reasonable.”

“Travis cried.”

I said nothing.

“He didn’t ask about you.”

I smiled slightly.

“That may be the most encouraging thing you’ve told me.”

Anna laughed.

A week passed.

Then two.

No contact.

No drive-by.

No message.

Travis respected the boundary.

That should have been ordinary.

Given our history, it felt significant.

One afternoon, I visited Daddy’s grave.

Not because of Travis.

I had not been in months.

Fresh flowers sat beside the stone.

No card.

I knew anyway.

Maybe I was wrong.

It did not matter.

I placed my own flowers beside them.

Two separate offerings.

No need to remove his.

No need to interpret them.

On the drive home, I passed the road leading toward Carol’s old house.

For years, every road in the parish seemed connected to some piece of the case.

Now they were becoming roads again.

That evening, the sun set behind the new houses on the western acreage.

Children rode bicycles along the development street.

Their voices carried through the tree buffer.

I sat on the porch.

My phone remained silent.

For once, silence did not feel like something hidden.

It felt peaceful.

Click here to continue reading: PART 24: Travis Kept His Distance After Release, Until a Storm Brought Him Back to the Road Outside Daddy’s House

The notice came eighteen months later.
