15 – Travis’s Cousin Had Pretended to Be Me in Person, and Her Explanation Revealed How Far the Family Had Normalized His Lies

Lindsay Hale Mercer lived forty minutes away.

I had met her perhaps a dozen times.

Weddings.

Funerals.

Christmas gatherings.

A crawfish boil at Carol’s house.

She was one of those relatives who remained familiar without ever becoming close.

She had hugged me.

Borrowed serving dishes.

Complimented my hair.

Once, she slept in Daddy’s house after drinking too much at a family party.

Now I was looking at a copy of her driver’s license attached to paperwork where she had introduced herself as me.

Not my license.

Hers.

That detail confused everyone.

“How did the law firm accept this?” I asked.

“They didn’t,” Rebecca said.

“What?”

“The meeting ended early.”

The archived notes explained.

Travis arrived with Lindsay and introduced her as his wife, June.

The intake assistant copied Lindsay’s identification before noticing the surname mismatch.

Lindsay claimed she had not yet updated her license after marriage.

But the first name was wrong too.

When questioned, Travis became irritated and said there had been a scheduling mistake.

They left.

No legal documents were executed.

“So why go at all?”

Daniel pointed to the appointment notes.

“Travis wanted information.”

The consultation concerned spousal waivers, property agreements and beneficiary rights.

He apparently hoped Lindsay could sit beside him, behave like a cooperative wife and answer enough questions for the lawyer to explain what documents would be required.

They were not trying to complete the fraud that day.

They were rehearsing it.

I stared at Lindsay’s photograph.

“That’s insane.”

Rebecca did not disagree.

Investigators contacted Lindsay.

Her first response was denial.

She said she had no memory of the appointment.

Then the law firm produced surveillance images retained in an old security archive.

Lindsay remembered.

Her attorney arranged an interview.

I did not attend.

By then I had learned that not every confession required an audience.

Rebecca told me afterward.

“Lindsay says Carol asked her to help.”

“Of course.”

“She claims she didn’t understand the financial background.”

“She knew she was pretending to be me.”

“Yes.”

“What did she think that was for?”

“She says Carol told her you were embarrassed about financial meetings and wanted someone to gather information.”

I stared.

“That is the stupidest explanation yet.”

“It is not especially persuasive.”

“What did Lindsay get?”

Rebecca hesitated.

“Five thousand dollars.”

I laughed once.

There was always money.

Not necessarily much.

Enough to convert discomfort into cooperation.

Lindsay said Travis gave her cash after the appointment.

She called it reimbursement.

For what?

Missing half a day of work.

Driving forty minutes.

Impersonating another human being.

The family had apparently developed flexible definitions of errands.

Investigators showed Lindsay other documents carrying my forged signature.

She denied signing them.

Forensic comparison supported her denial.

Her role seemed limited to the lawyer meeting and several phone calls where she pretended to be me.

“Several?”

Rebecca nodded.

“How many?”

“At least three.”

One to an insurance company.

One to an investment administrator.

One to a lender.

The calls had been recorded.

I listened to only one.

Lindsay said, “Yes, this is June Hale.”

My skin crawled.

She answered security questions.

My birthday.

Daddy’s address.

The last four digits of my Social Security number.

Information Travis provided.

The representative asked whether I authorized Travis to discuss the account.

“Yes,” Lindsay said.

Just like that.

One word.

A door opened.

The call lasted four minutes.

Four minutes to become me.

I stopped the recording.

“That’s enough.”

Rebecca closed the file.

I thought about all the times I had sat beside Lindsay at family gatherings.

Did she remember the call?

Did she look at me and think about my birthday?

My Social Security number?

My father’s address?

Or had the act become so ordinary inside that family that she barely considered it?

Carol requested another meeting.

I refused.

Then she wrote a letter.

Rebecca asked whether I wanted to read it.

“No.”

A month earlier, I would have.

Now I did not need another explanation.

Carol’s actions were documented.

Her regret belonged to her.

Forgiveness, if it ever came, did not require me to consume every apology she produced.

Lindsay’s cooperation led investigators to another relative.

Carol’s brother, Wayne.

He had allowed Travis to use his business address for mail.

Unlike Lindsay, Wayne immediately admitted it.

“He told me June knew.”

That sentence again.

June knows.

June agrees.

June doesn’t care.

June hates paperwork.

The imaginary June had become a family employee.

She existed wherever permission was required.

Wayne had no financial stake.

No payment.

He simply trusted Travis.

That distinction mattered.

Not every person in the network was malicious.

Some were careless.

Some selfish.

Some deceived.

Some willing.

Responsibility came in degrees.

I needed to remember that because anger prefers flat landscapes.

Everyone guilty.

Everyone bad.

Everyone against me.

Reality was messier.

Carol and Travis knew the core fraud.

Gerald knowingly violated banking procedures.

Lindsay knowingly impersonated me.

Others helped without understanding what their help enabled.

That did not excuse them.

It did make them different.

The prosecutor handling the financial investigation eventually met with me.

She was a compact woman named Andrea Morales who spoke quickly and took handwritten notes.

“We need to discuss expectations.”

“I have very few left.”

She almost smiled.

“Good place to start.”

Criminal cases did not reproduce emotional justice.

Charges depended on provable acts.

Dates.

Jurisdiction.

Statutes.

Documents.

Witness credibility.

Some conduct was too old.

Some fell into gray areas.

Some civil wrongdoing did not fit criminal charges.

Some crimes were easier to prove than others.

“You may hear outcomes that feel smaller than the conduct,” Andrea said.

“I understand.”

“Do you?”

“No.”

That earned a real smile.

“Fair answer.”

She explained that Travis faced significant exposure related to fraud, false documents, business misrepresentations and other financial conduct. Carol’s cooperation could reduce consequences. Gerald’s would too.

Lindsay might receive comparatively limited punishment.

I listened.

Then asked, “Do I get a vote?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Andrea looked surprised.

“I don’t want to become Travis.”

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t want everyone’s future to become another spreadsheet where I decide what each person deserves.”

She set down her pen.

“That’s healthier than most people arrive.”

“Don’t make it inspirational.”

She laughed.

Apparently Rebecca had warned people.

My role was evidence.

Not sentencing.

That boundary became useful.

I returned to my own life.

The porch repairs finished.

The upstairs air conditioner worked quietly.

The new washing machine remained almost suspiciously silent.

I hired a local teenager to help maintain the fence line twice a month.

The first time I paid him, I almost heard Travis complaining about wasting money on work I could do myself.

Then I looked at the blister forming on the teenager’s hand and thought about value.

Labor costs money because time costs something.

Including mine.

I paid him fairly.

One Saturday, Brooke visited.

She had never seen Daddy’s property.

We walked to the pond.

“This is what all that was about?”

“Partly.”

She looked around.

“It’s beautiful.”

“Daddy would have said it needs mowing.”

She laughed.

Brooke had begun building a cautious relationship with Noah.

Anna allowed it.

Carol’s position was more complicated.

Noah knew Carol as a family friend rather than grandmother.

That lie could not last forever.

Anna planned to tell him gradually, with professional guidance.

I stayed outside that decision.

Not every truth connected to Travis belonged to me.

That realization felt liberating.

For months, every discovery entered my life like an obligation.

Now I could recognize boundaries.

Noah’s relationship with his father belonged to Noah and Anna.

Brooke’s relationship with Carol belonged to Brooke.

Melissa’s guilt belonged to Melissa.

Travis’s consequences belonged to Travis.

My job was smaller.

Live my own life accurately.

The legal process moved forward.

Gulf Horizon’s restructuring produced partial recoveries for investors.

Evelyn Shaw received a portion of her money back through asset sales and restitution arrangements.

Martin Vale recovered some losses.

Derek retained a smaller legitimate business operation after separating it entirely from Travis.

Melissa left real-estate development.

Gerald formally admitted misconduct.

Carol sold the Galveston condominium interest and another investment property.

Money returned.

Not perfectly.

But materially.

Then Andrea called.

“We have a problem.”

Those four words still worked on me.

“What?”

“Travis is claiming Lindsay acted as you without his knowledge.”

I laughed.

“How?”

“He says Carol arranged the appointment.”

“Wasn’t he physically there?”

“Yes.”

“And introduced her as me?”

“That is what the law-firm notes say.”

“So what’s the problem?”

“Not that claim.”

Andrea paused.

“He produced a recording.”

My stomach tightened.

“Of whom?”

“Carol.”

The recording appeared to show Carol discussing the impersonation plan before the Houston appointment.

Travis argued that his mother told him Lindsay had permission from me to attend as my representative.

“That makes no sense.”

“We agree it raises questions.”

“Did he call her June?”

“Yes.”

“Then he knew.”

“That is likely how we would argue it.”

But the recording mattered for another reason.

Carol said something near the end.

“June doesn’t need to know until after ten years.”

Ten years.

That phrase connected directly to Travis’s estate ledger.

Divorce before ten years.

Divorce after ten years.

Updated estate documents after ten years.

Something about the tenth anniversary mattered.

Not emotionally.

Financially.

Daniel and Rebecca began reviewing Louisiana marital-property rules, old legal advice Travis received, retirement benefits, insurance provisions and investment structures.

Nothing obvious explained the fixation.

Then Leah found it.

Not in state law.

In Travis’s offshore employment package.

A supplemental retirement plan.

After ten years of credited service, certain benefits became fully vested.

Travis reached ten years shortly after our tenth wedding anniversary would have occurred.

He had tied the dates together in his private planning.

If he stayed married until his employment benefits vested, then left, he expected to have enough liquid assets, hidden investments and retirement security to walk away comfortably.

I stared at the projection.

“So there really was a date.”

“Yes,” Leah said.

“When?”

She pointed.

Fourteen months after I discovered the tax notice.

Travis had planned to leave me the following year.

The forged property financing was not intended to preserve our future.

It was meant to rescue Gulf Horizon long enough for Travis to reach his exit date.

After that, his own ledger showed the plan.

Separate.

Leave June house.

Retain liquid.

Relocate TX.

For years, I had wondered whether I destroyed the marriage by investigating the bank accounts.

Now I had the answer in Travis’s handwriting.

The marriage already had an expiration date.

He simply forgot to tell me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: Travis Had Chosen the Date He Planned to Leave Me, but His Exit
