This one was blunt. My H leaned forward. The copied H leaned backward.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath the signature appeared a witness.<\/p>\n<p>CAROL A. HALE.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, I could not place the name because my brain rejected it.<\/p>\n<p>Then I understood.<\/p>\n<p>Carol.<\/p>\n<p>Travis\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n<p>My mother-in-law.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who hugged me at our wedding and said she had always wanted a daughter.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who ate Christmas dinner at Daddy\u2019s table.<\/p>\n<p>The woman who repeatedly told me how fortunate I was to have a hardworking husband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelissa,\u201d I said. \u201cWhere did you get this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTravis gave it to us when the company started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Carol personally witnessed it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what the document claims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>She was already taking notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy are you telling me now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Gulf Horizon is worse off than Travis admitted. Contractors are unpaid. A lender is asking questions. Derek found altered financial statements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAltered how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAssets were overstated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing my property?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour property was part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that message you sent Travis?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa became quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree weeks ago, Derek confronted him. Travis told us not to worry about the inconsistencies because he was handling you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHandling me how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said once you were removed from the household accounts, you would stop asking questions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cruelty of that sentence was almost clinical.<\/p>\n<p>Taking away my access to money had not been an angry reaction.<\/p>\n<p>It had been strategy.<\/p>\n<p>He expected dependence to produce silence.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca leaned toward the phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMelissa, this is Rebecca Sloan, June\u2019s attorney. Please preserve every communication and document involving Travis, June, Raymond Parker, the trust and the property. Do not alter or discard anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course there was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA document dated about six months ago. It says June agreed to transfer partial ownership of the property to Travis if the company needed additional financing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarol witnessed that one too?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was notarized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room seemed to contract.<\/p>\n<p>A witness could lie.<\/p>\n<p>A forged signature could be copied.<\/p>\n<p>A notarization claimed I had personally appeared before someone and signed.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa sent the page.<\/p>\n<p>There was my false signature.<\/p>\n<p>Below it sat a notary stamp belonging to someone I did not recognize.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca immediately told me not to contact Carol or the notary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf these are fraudulent documents, nobody gets advance notice to coordinate explanations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That afternoon another attorney joined us. Daniel Price specialized in financial litigation and fraud.<\/p>\n<p>He spent nearly an hour examining the documents.<\/p>\n<p>Finally he removed his glasses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe verify everything independently. If June\u2019s account is correct, we could be looking at forged signatures, false financial representations, misuse of trust information and attempted property fraud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The language sounded larger than a marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Not disagreement.<\/p>\n<p>Not financial incompatibility.<\/p>\n<p>Fraud.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel wanted authentic signature samples, estate records and historical bank documents. We submitted formal requests to Daddy\u2019s bank.<\/p>\n<p>That evening, Travis called repeatedly.<\/p>\n<p>I ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>Then Carol called.<\/p>\n<p>Twice.<\/p>\n<p>I ignored her too.<\/p>\n<p>At 9:41, she texted.<\/p>\n<p>June, there are two sides to this. Please call me before you do something that destroys the family.<\/p>\n<p>I read the message several times.<\/p>\n<p>She did not ask what had happened.<\/p>\n<p>She did not ask why I was upset.<\/p>\n<p>She already knew.<\/p>\n<p>I forwarded it to Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, pounding on my front door woke me.<\/p>\n<p>Carol stood on the porch.<\/p>\n<p>I did not open it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJune!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another knock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know you\u2019re in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I began recording with my phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to stop this before people get hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>People.<\/p>\n<p>Not Travis.<\/p>\n<p>People.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease open the door.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stayed silent.<\/p>\n<p>Then Carol said, \u201cYour father wanted Travis to have security too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anger brought me close enough to answer through the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father died before Travis ever lived here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know everything Raymond said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then I heard her walking away.<\/p>\n<p>By the time I looked through the window, she was returning to her car.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca and I searched Daddy\u2019s notebook that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Most entries were ordinary: fence measurements, contractor numbers, roof estimates.<\/p>\n<p>Near the back, she stopped.<\/p>\n<p>August 14, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Daddy had written about Travis.<\/p>\n<p>Travis asked again about adding name to property after wedding. Told her this is June\u2019s business.<\/p>\n<p>Carol had contacted my dying father about his estate.<\/p>\n<p>She had just stood on my porch trying to convince me he wanted Travis protected.<\/p>\n<p>Daddy\u2019s own handwriting contradicted her.<\/p>\n<p>Three days later, his bank finally located the archived trust records.<\/p>\n<p>The representative could tell me only limited information before certified copies were released.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were transfers after Mr. Parker\u2019s death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot directly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Travis?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome funds eventually entered an account associated with that name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hand tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n<p>The certified records arrived the next afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca called immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJune, come in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Forty minutes later I sat beside her and Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>Daddy\u2019s trust had contained approximately the amount shown on his old statement.<\/p>\n<p>Money began leaving after his death.<\/p>\n<p>But Travis had not initially been listed as the person authorized to move it.<\/p>\n<p>Another signer had been added shortly before Daddy\u2019s health deteriorated.<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca slid the form toward me.<\/p>\n<p>The name read:<\/p>\n<p>ELAINE PARKER.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother died when I was twelve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The authorized-signer date was November 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Fourteen years after my mother\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had used a dead woman\u2019s identity to gain access to Daddy\u2019s trust.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel showed me the contact address on the application.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Carol\u2019s house.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw the emergency contact.<\/p>\n<p>TRAVIS HALE.<\/p>\n<p>My phone began vibrating.<\/p>\n<p>Melissa.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJune, where are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Rebecca\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDerek opened a company storage unit this morning. He found a box Travis said belonged to your father\u2019s estate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My entire body went rigid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s inside?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOriginal bank papers. Identification copies. Trust documents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Melissa stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd a photograph.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA photograph of what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot what.
