23 – Margaret’s Recording Finally Explained the Baby Switch, While Christopher Prepared to Turn Against Linda Inside the Salem House

The police operation changed again after Charlotte’s call.

Now we knew Rebecca and Charlotte were inside.

Christopher was there too.

Linda was armed.

More importantly, Christopher appeared to be communicating with Charlotte behind Linda’s back.

That gave police an ally inside.

Maybe.

Trust had become a luxury none of us could afford.

We reached Portland shortly before dawn and went directly to a police staging location closer to Salem.

Dad remained hospitalized under guard.

Cole remained under guard too.

Thomas Barrett was still in custody.

Daniel had been transported north to assist investigators.

When he arrived, the first thing he asked was, “Rebecca?”

“Alive.”

He closed his eyes.

“Did you speak to her?”

“No. Charlotte know.”

He sat down heavily.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he whispered, “You found her.”

“Linda found her.”

The distinction mattered.

Daniel looked toward Jessica.

“And Victoria?”

“Jessica,” she corrected.

“Jessica.”

She met his eyes.

“God.”

“Apparently everyone except me knew pieces.”

“I didn’t know.”

“Good.”

She walked away.

Daniel looked at me.

“She hates me.”

“She currently hates the architecture of the universe.”

“That seems reasonable.”

Police obtained a copy of Margaret’s recording from Charlotte’s apartment.

She had kept it hidden inside a box of childhood medical records.

Linda had another copy.

The police version had never been played recently.

We listened.

Margaret’s voice was older than I remembered.

Tired.

She recorded it shortly before her death.

She addressed Charlotte directly.

“My name is Margaret Hayes, and if you’re hearing this, I failed to tell you while I was alive.”

Elena covered her mouth.

Margaret explained the hospital night.

Elena arrived under the alias Maria Santos.

Victor expected the baby.

Linda arrived unexpectedly several hours later, bleeding and terrified.

She had hidden her pregnancy from Cole.

She gave birth to a girl.

Jessica.

Cole learned.

He sent a message through Linda.

The baby could not exist.

Linda believed that meant he would have her killed.

Then Victor’s people arrived to collect Elena’s child.

Linda made a decision.

She switched the identification bands.

Her own baby was handed to Victor’s people.

Elena’s baby remained.

“Why?” Jessica whispered.

Margaret’s recording answered.

Linda believed Victor would keep the child alive because he needed Elena’s supposed daughter for the trust scheme.

It was the safest hiding place she could imagine.

Inside another dangerous man’s family.

Victor received the wrong baby.

He raised Linda’s daughter as Victoria Morales.

Margaret discovered the switch hours later.

By then Linda had disappeared.

Elena was drugged.

Victor believed he possessed Elena’s child.

Margaret had one newborn with no safe identity.

So she called Michael Hart.

Her former boyfriend.

A widower.

A man she trusted.

He agreed to raise the baby.

Charlotte.

Margaret created Caroline Hart as a paper mother, then arranged records suggesting Caroline died.

It was crude.

Illegal.

But it worked.

Victor never found Charlotte.

Not for years.

Margaret continued.

“I told Arthur the baby went to Canada because Arthur loved Elena enough to search.”

Dad listened through the phone.

His face crumpled.

Margaret had lied because she knew my father would not leave the mystery alone.

If he searched, Victor might follow.

“I’m sorry, Artie,” she said on the recording. “You were terrible at letting go.”

Dad laughed through tears.

“She knew me.”

Margaret explained the money.

Charlotte needed heart surgery.

Michael could not afford all of it.

Margaret asked Arthur for help without identifying the child.

Dad sent money.

Again and again.

Then Margaret spoke about Christopher.

Her first child.

Born when she was seventeen.

Adopted.

Victor found him decades later.

He recruited him under the name Christopher Grey.

Victor told Christopher that Margaret had abandoned him because she was ashamed.

By the time Margaret found him, he hated her.

“I tried to tell him the truth,” she said.

“But Victor had already built a home inside his anger.”

Elena looked toward the dark window.

That phrase described half the people in our story.

Victor had not merely collected secrets.

He built identities from wounds.

Margaret’s final section concerned Cole.

She had discovered that Cole was responsible for far more than Elena’s case.

He sold outcomes.

Custody.

Sentences.

Probate decisions.

Property disputes.

Victor was one client among many.

Linda helped Cole for years because he controlled her through Jessica’s existence.

Thomas helped Linda because he loved her and believed they were protecting their family.

Everyone’s corruption had a private justification.

Eventually, those justifications became a machine.

Margaret found Cole’s private ledger.

She did not steal it.

She found where he hid it.

She placed the key inside Arthur’s toolbox.

“Artie,” her recording said, “if you ever find the brass key, it means somebody finally needs the truth more than we need safety.”

Dad covered his face.

Thirty years.

The key had waited beneath his tools.

Margaret ended with Charlotte.

“You were not abandoned. You were hidden because too many people wanted to turn children into weapons.”

Elena sobbed.

Jessica sat motionless.

Then Margaret said something none of us expected.

“And Victoria, if this ever reaches you, Linda loved you enough to give you away and then spent the rest of her life becoming the kind of person she once tried to save you from.”

Jessica lowered her head.

The recording ended.

No one spoke for a long time.

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

A message from Rebecca.

Bathroom. 2 minutes.

He called immediately.

Rebecca answered in a whisper.

“Daniel.”

He closed his eyes.

“Hey.”

“I’m okay.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

“You’re right.”

Even now.

Even there.

They sounded married.

“What’s happening?” Maya asked.

Rebecca whispered, “Christopher is going to help us leave.”

“When?”

“Soon.”

“Linda?”

“She’s unraveling.”

“Armed?”

“Yes.”

“How many weapons?”

“Handgun.
