something from Arthur.

Linda wanted the key.

Rebecca was trapped between them.

“Christopher may be using Linda’s hostage situation to force Dad into a conversation,” I said.

Maya nodded.

“Dangerous, but plausible.”

Dad sounded offended.

“I’m still here.”

“We send Dad into the Salem property.

Good.

Instead, they proposed bringing him close enough for a controlled phone conversation while tactical officers prepared extraction.

Dad objected.

No one cared.

Before any of that happened, we needed Cole’s cabin searched.

The brass key Margaret had hidden might be more valuable to Linda than the recording.

Police teams were already heading toward Hood River.

At 1:17 in the morning, they reached the property.

The cabin was empty.

The key opened a steel door Victor.

Another showed Linda.

Then Margaret.

And Christopher.

Cole had watched all of them.

One picture caught my attention.

A young girl stood beside a hospital bed.

Maybe ten years old.

Dark hair.

Thin shoulders.

A surgical scar visible above the neckline of her gown.

On the back:

C.H. placement—1989.

“Elena.”

She took the phone.

Her hands began shaking.

“Could that be her?”

“I don’t know.”

The girl would have been roughly the right age.

Maya asked investigators to search for associated records.

A file marked C.H. appeared in Cole’s safe.

Inside were medical bills.

Adoption paperwork.

Payments.

And a name.

Charlotte Hart.

Elena whispered it.

“Charlotte.”

The surname Hart matched Caroline Hart, the supposed adoption representative.

Margaret had used an alias.

Caroline Hart.

Then apparently gave the child the same surname.

“Is Charlotte alive?” I asked.

Maya searched.

There were several.

Then one record aligned.

Charlotte stopped.

“St. Vincent.”

No one spoke.

The hospital again.

Margaret’s hospital.

Linda’s old hospital.

The hospital where Dad hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because if Charlotte is Elena’s daughter, Linda may already know.”

That was the danger.

Linda had access to hospital information.

She might know exactly who Charlotte was.

And if she had spent decades trying to bury what happened to the babies, Charlotte was not merely Elena’s missing daughter.

She was evidence.

We contacted St. Vincent.

Charlotte Hart had finished her shift forty minutes earlier.

Security tried calling.

No answer.

Her emergency contact was her husband.

He answered.

Charlotte had not arrived home.

Her car remained in the hospital garage.

Security reviewed cameras.

At 12:38 a.m., Charlotte left the cardiology floor.

At 12:44, she entered an elevator.

At 12:46, she emerged in the parking garage.

A woman waited near her car.

Older.

Silver-framed glasses.

Linda Barrett.

The footage showed them speaking.

Charlotte did not appear frightened.

Then Linda handed her something.

Charlotte read it.

Her posture changed.

She followed Linda toward another vehicle.

Maya enlarged the object.

A photograph.

The same photograph from Cole’s cabin.

Charlotte as a child after heart surgery.

Linda had reached Elena’s daughter before we
