Property. Criminal sentences. Whoever paid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cole had built an entire market around judicial power.<\/p>\n<p>The Morales conspiracy had been only one branch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Linda knew everything,\u201d Maya said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich is why she kept the archive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why shoot Cole now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he was the last person who could identify her as the person carrying out his orders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the empty safe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd she took the tape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProbably.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere would she go?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad did not know.<\/p>\n<p>But Elena suddenly did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLinda won\u2019t run alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe left Thomas in police custody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t understand.<\/p>\n<p>Elena did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has spent her entire life keeping leverage over people. Thomas is the one person who has leverage over her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat leverage?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca.<\/p>\n<p>Linda would not disappear while Rebecca could testify against her.<\/p>\n<p>My phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRebecca\u2019s gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwenty minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she leave voluntarily?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer hotel room was open.
