differently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was right.<\/p>\n<p>I could barely look at her at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was your mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaudia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica froze.<\/p>\n<p>I took out my phone and showed her the photograph of the hospital record.<\/p>\n<p>She read it.<\/p>\n<p>Her face emptied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere did you get this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad kept it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s fake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother was Claudia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaudia couldn\u2019t have children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour biological mother was Elena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy did you get that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor Victoria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We found an old cassette player at a convenience store two blocks away.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the motel room, I inserted the tape.<\/p>\n<p>Static crackled.<\/p>\n<p>Then Elena\u2019s voice filled the room.<\/p>\n<p>She sounded younger than in the video.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy little girl,\u201d she began.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica made a small sound.<\/p>\n<p>Elena spoke for eleven minutes.<\/p>\n<p>She apologized for giving her up.<\/p>\n<p>She explained stared at the silent cassette player.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom where?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father\u2019s files.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did they say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat Daniel Mercer died in the fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe same fire?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded.<\/p>\n<p>I called Maya.<\/p>\n<p>She answered Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout twelve miles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jessica stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>Then Maya said something that made the motel room suddenly feel colder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan, Daniel Mercer visited St. Vincent Medical Center yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShortly before Arthur went into
