How did he end up in the middle of this?”

“He married Elena.”

The answer was simple enough to hurt.

Maya explained that Elena's family had expected her to marry within their social circle. Instead, she fell in love with Arthur, a man who owned little beyond a truck, tools, and an irritating certainty that rich people did not frighten him.

Victor despised him.

After I was born, the conflict worsened. Lawyers appeared. Investigators followed my parents. Reports questioned Elena's stability. Eventually Victor sought control over both her finances and her child.

“Me,” I said.

“Yes.”

A knock interrupted us.

The surgeon entered wearing blue scrubs. Instead, I parked near the Columbia River where the water looked almost black beneath the evening clouds.

I placed the envelope on the passenger seat.

For several minutes, I simply stared at Dad's handwriting.

Then I broke the seal.

Inside were three things: a handwritten letter, a flash drive, and a laboratory packet marked as DNA results. Dad had written another instruction across the packet telling me to read his letter first.

I unfolded the pages.

His handwriting began neatly and became less steady as the letter continued.

He told me the greatest wrong he had committed against me was allowing me to believe my mother was dead.

I stopped reading.

The river moved beyond the windshield.

I forced myself onward.

Dad wrote that Elena's brother, Victor Morales, had wanted control of a family fortune. Elena's marriage to an ordinary construction worker had given Victor another argument that she was irresponsible. After I was born, Victor's efforts escalated from financial pressure to surveillance and threats.

Dad fought back.

For nearly two years, he challenged court filings, gathered witnesses, and tried to prove that Elena was neither unstable nor incapable.

Then witnesses changed their accounts.

Documents disappeared.

Their lawyer withdrew.

And one night, the house burned.

The newspapers reported that Elena had died.

Dad's letter told another story.

Elena had survived the first moments of the fire. She got me outside and placed me in Arthur's arms. Then she went back for records she believed could expose Victor.

Dad waited.

She never came out through the same window.

But no reliable identification ever proved that the remains found afterward were hers.

Later, Dad received a message.

Elena was alive.

She believed Victor would kill all three of us if she returned.

She begged Arthur to take me away and allow the world—including me—to believe she was gone.

I lowered the letter.

Thirty years of childhood grief shifted beneath me.

I remembered asking Dad why Mom had died.

I remembered school projects where other children brought photographs of their mothers.

I remembered Father's Day cards that I made twice because one card never seemed enough.

Dad had carried the answer through all of it.

At the bottom of the envelope was a photograph.

Arthur looked barely thirty. Elena stood beside him, laughing. Between them was a toddler with cake smeared across his cheeks.

Me.

I turned the picture over.

A note identified it as my third birthday.

I cried in the driver's seat until darkness covered the river.

When I finally arrived home, Jessica was waiting.

She stood the moment I entered.

“How is Arthur?”

“Stable.”

She crossed the room and hugged me.

For eight years that embrace had meant safety.

That night, I noticed her eyes.

They were looking over my shoulder.

At the envelope in my hand.

“What is that?”

“Hospital paperwork.”

“Can I see it?”

“No.”

She released me.

“Why not?”

“It's private.”

Her face became very still.

“You've never kept things from me.”

“I've also never had my father nearly die.”

She watched me walk toward my office.

Then she asked the question that erased whatever reassurance I had managed to build during the drive home.

“Did Arthur say something about me?”

I turned.

Jessica stood beneath the hallway light, waiting.

I locked the envelope inside my safe.

Hours later, a faint metallic sound woke me.

Jessica's side of the bed was empty.

I went downstairs without turning on the hallway lights.

A glow showed beneath my office door.

Through the narrow opening, I saw my wife kneeling before my safe.

In one hand she held a ring of duplicate keys I had never known existed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: I Caught My Wife Opening My Safe, Then Found the Clue That Connected Her to My Mother’s Disappearance

I showed Maya the message without saying anything.
