Tires sprayed water across my windshield, and twice I realized I was gripping the steering wheel hard enough to hurt my fingers. I kept telling myself there had to be a reasonable explanation.<\/p>\n<p>Dad and Jessica had never been close. That wasn&#39;t unusual. She thought he was stubborn. He thought she cared too much about appearances. Their disagreements usually concerned harmless things\u2014money, holidays, whether an old truck became \u201cclassic\u201d or simply \u201cdangerous\u201d after twenty years.<\/p>\n<p>None of that explained a sealed envelope.<\/p>\n<p>At a red light I called Jessica.<\/p>\n<p>She answered on the second ring. \u201cHey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad collapsed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey think it&#39;s an aneurysm. They&#39;re taking him into surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh my God. Ethan, where are you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDriving to St. Vincent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll meet you there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The word came out before I had decided to say it.<\/p>\n<p>Another silence followed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean, no?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know how long this will take. Stay home for now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan, he&#39;s your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you&#39;re going there alone?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;ll call you when I know something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She sounded hurt when she answered. \u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I ended the call and immediately felt guilty.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered Dad&#39;s warning.<\/p>\n<p>The guilt remained, but I did not call back.<\/p>\n<p>The emergency entrance smelled of disinfectant, wet coats, and burnt coffee. A nurse directed me upstairs, where Linda met me near the surgical waiting area. She was in her fifties, with silver-framed glasses and the composed manner of someone accustomed to meeting frightened families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father has already gone into surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow bad is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe surgeon will speak with you as soon as possible. They caught the rupture quickly, which matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas he in pain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer landed harder than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>Linda touched my arm. \u201cHe remained remarkably focused. He kept asking whether we&#39;d reached you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the double doors at the end of the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he say anything else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wanted an attorney contacted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaya?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Linda studied me. \u201cYou know her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I heard the name on the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She nodded. \u201cMaya Sharma. She arrived about fifteen minutes ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father has an attorney?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apparently my disbelief showed, because Linda gave me a sympathetic half-smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says she&#39;s represented him for years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That made no sense. Dad complained about paying twenty dollars for haircuts. The idea that he had quietly maintained a lawyer sounded like someone describing a different man.<\/p>\n<p>Linda gestured toward a consultation room. \u201cShe&#39;s waiting for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait. The envelope?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She went to the nurses&#39; station and returned carrying a large manila envelope sealed along the flap.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized Dad&#39;s handwriting instantly.<\/p>\n<p>My name was across the front.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath it was an instruction telling me to speak with Maya before opening anything.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the warning.<\/p>\n<p>Do not let Jessica see this.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he write this here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShortly before surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas he confused?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer came without hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was frightened and in pain, but he knew exactly where he was and what he was saying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I held the envelope against my chest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would he mention my wife?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she call him? Did someone come here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot that I&#39;m aware of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thanked her and entered the consultation room.<\/p>\n<p>A woman rose from the table. She looked to be in her early forties and wore a charcoal suit with practical shoes. A worn leather briefcase rested beside her chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan Hayes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m Maya Sharma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We shook hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou represent my father?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor nearly eleven years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat down slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleven?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya did not immediately answer. Instead, she looked at the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe gave it to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe nurse did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you opened it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I leaned forward. \u201cEveryone keeps saying things that make this worse without actually telling me anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I don&#39;t think you do. My father asked me for money three days ago. Today he collapses. Suddenly I learn he has had a lawyer for eleven years, and he&#39;s leaving secret instructions about my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya&#39;s face tightened at the mention of Jessica.<\/p>\n<p>I noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know of her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A cold sensation moved through me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means Arthur asked me to follow a specific sequence if something happened to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#39;s not dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why are we talking as though he is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause your father believed there was a possibility he might not survive long enough to explain this himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pushed my chair back slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was he doing when he collapsed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObtaining certified records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat records?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDocuments concerning your family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I remembered Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWere those what the thousand dollars paid for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was the rest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA laboratory fee and investigative expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what test?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya folded her hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can&#39;t answer that yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anger rose through my fear. \u201cHe&#39;s in surgery. You&#39;re sitting here with answers about my own family, and you&#39;re telling me you can&#39;t answer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m following his instructions because the information involves more than Arthur.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything inside me seemed to stop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother died when I was four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya did not move.<\/p>\n<p>I heard the hum of the ventilation system above us.<\/p>\n<p>Finally I said, \u201cWhy are you looking at me like that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause what Arthur told you about her was incomplete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncomplete?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe believed it was necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother died in a fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was the story you were given.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEthan\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. I remember the newspaper clipping. I saw it when I was a teenager.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mouth went dry.<\/p>\n<p>Maya reached into her briefcase.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father&#39;s concern was that too many things were accepted as fact without ever being properly verified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She placed a thin folder on the table but kept one hand on it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe woman you knew as Sarah Hayes was born Elena Morales.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I shook my head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mother&#39;s name was Sarah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe used that name for several years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause she was hiding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya released the folder.<\/p>\n<p>I opened it.<\/p>\n<p>The first document was an old court filing. The paper had been scanned, but the date was visible.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly thirty years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Another page concerned guardianship.<\/p>\n<p>Another was a protective order.<\/p>\n<p>Then I found a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>A young woman with long dark hair stood outside a modest house holding a little boy.<\/p>\n<p>I knew the boy immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>There was a small mark below his left ear, the same birthmark I still saw every morning when I shaved.<\/p>\n<p>I touched the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had almost no clear memories of my mother. A laugh. The smell of soap. Someone singing while folding laundry. For years I had wondered which memories were real and which I had built from Dad&#39;s stories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would she need a protective order?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer family was powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow powerful?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho was she hiding from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHer brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoney was part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnough to ruin lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stood and walked to the window.<\/p>\n<p>Rain streaked the glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father told me she died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor thirty years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you&#39;re telling me she might not have?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m telling you the records don&#39;t support the certainty you were raised with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya looked toward the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe knew more than he told you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone vibrated.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at her name.<\/p>\n<p>Maya noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t tell her where you are in this process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe&#39;s my wife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, apparently nobody understands that. I&#39;ve been married to her for eight years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maya&#39;s expression remained controlled, but something in her eyes sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you should ask yourself why your father used what may have been his last conscious minutes to warn you specifically about her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The phone stopped ringing.<\/p>\n<p>A moment later, a message appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Is he okay?
