remember something connected to me might break through my fear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what was I supposed to remember?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas smiled sadly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had once taken Mom to that marina when she was pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>They rang the same bell.<\/p>\n<p>Mom touched her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI forgot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa recreated the trip with four-year-old me.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas watched.<\/p>\n<p>The bell was not originally an encryption key.<\/p>\n<p>It became one later.<\/p>\n<p>At first it was simply Grandpa telling Thomas:<\/p>\n<p>This is still your family.<\/p>\n<p>Come home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened after I rang it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked toward the floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor maybe two seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A memory surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>Not a face.<\/p>\n<p>A man near the railing.<\/p>\n<p>I had asked Grandpa who he was.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa said:<\/p>\n<p>An old friend.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had heard me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou waved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI waved at you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI waved back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen I left.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stood abruptly and walked to the window.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas did not follow.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cIs that the choice you regret most?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not disappearing initially.<\/p>\n<p>Not staging his death.<\/p>\n<p>Not going west.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving that marina.<\/p>\n<p>Because by then he knew I was safe enough for Grandpa to bring him near us.<\/p>\n<p>He could have stayed.<\/p>\n<p>He could have told Mom.<\/p>\n<p>He could have begun repairing everything nine years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>Instead he left.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told myself the network still existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was terrified you would love the father you imagined more than the man I actually was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou thought I imagined you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought you were dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not imagining.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes lowered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also thought Rachel would never forgive me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom turned from the window.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you didn\u2019t give me the chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I\u2019m angriest about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom came back and sat beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou took my decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou took Chloe\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou took thirteen years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas did not defend himself.<\/p>\n<p>Mom asked, \u201cWould you make the same choice now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven knowing the danger?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell you enough to choose with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom nodded.<\/p>\n<p>That was the answer she needed.<\/p>\n<p>Not that he would magically eliminate danger.<\/p>\n<p>That he would stop making decisions alone and calling them protection.<\/p>\n<p>I asked, \u201cWhat happened to the torn page?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel tore it out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I groaned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t a clue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything is a clue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom said, \u201cDad probably threw it away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at both of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou two have terrible instincts about Grandpa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That weekend Henderson solved it.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa had given him the torn page years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henderson shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said if Thomas ever stopped lying to himself, give it back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve had it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor nine years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could\u2019ve told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were legally dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat excuse is getting old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henderson handed him the folded paper.<\/p>\n<p>The original seventy-two-hour plan.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom, Thomas had written:<\/p>\n<p>RETURN HOME \u2014 8:00 P.M.<\/p>\n<p>Underneath, Grandpa had added later:<\/p>\n<p>You missed the hour.
