a desk, lamp, bookshelf, and eventually some of my clothes.

He never called it my room.

I did.

That mattered.

Mom and Thomas were not together.

People thirteen years could not be repaired by a dramatic kiss.

One evening in December, Thomas asked Mom to dinner.

Not family dinner.

Dinner.

She stared at him for so anger.

My rejection.

Legal consequences.

Questions he could not answer.

Eventually staying away became easier than admitting how long he had already stayed predictably.

They argued sometimes.

Once loudly enough that I heard from my bedroom.

The argument was about Grandpa.

Thomas believed Samuel had done the best he could.

Mom said Thomas defended him because admitting Grandpa’s choices were wrong meant admitting his own were too.

Silence followed.

Then Dad said, “You’re Fear explained my choices. It did not make them someone else’s choices.”

Thomas clipped the newspaper quote.

Mom asked why.

“Because he finally said it correctly.”

Dad applied the same sentence to himself.

That was obvious.

Evan Cole went to trial.

Unlike Matthew and Vale, he refused a plea.

He called the network a government necessity.

He claimed Bishop protected the city from larger scandals.

His attorneys attacked Mirror as illegally gathered evidence.

Some evidence was excluded.

Enough remained.

Financial transfers.

Messages with Derek.

Orders to Ruiz.

Kidnapping Henderson.

Redwood contacts.

The succession system.

He was convicted on most major counts.

When the verdict came, Hayes sent one text.

Done.

I stared at it.

Nothing felt done.

But one chapter was.

Arthur Kensington attended Derek’s sentencing.

So did Mom.

I stayed home.

Derek apologized publicly to her.

She listened.

Then left.

Later I asked if she forgave him.

“No.”

“Maybe someday?”

“I don’t know.”

That was allowed.

Valerie’s sentencing came in March.

Mom asked whether I wanted to submit a victim-impact statement.

I almost refused.

Then I wrote one.

Not about punishment.

About the moment Valerie said I was supposed to be at school.

That sentence had stayed with me.

It meant she had planned around my absence.

I wrote:

You did not expect to see me because your plan worked only if I was a detail you could schedule around.

I told her I remembered birthday gifts and braiding lessons too.

That made the betrayal worse.

I did not say I hated her.

I didn’t.

I didn’t say I forgave her.

I didn’t.

The judge read the vanished.

Spring arrived.

Media attention faded.

The federal review continued.

Wrongful convictions were reopened.

Several people were released.

Others learned their cases had been manipulated but their convictions still stood because independent evidence remained.

Reality refused to become neat.

One Saturday, Thomas invited Mom and me to Lake Geneva.

I almost said no.

Too many secrets began there.

He said, “No evidence.”

“No dead rope.

He rang it once.

Then twice.

Nobody around him knew what the sound meant to me.

That felt good.

Dad bought three ice creams.

Mom got
