He agreed because he believed Rachel and the unborn child would otherwise be killed.<\/p>\n<p>Mom lowered the letter.<\/p>\n<p>Her father had known from the first night that Thomas survived.<\/p>\n<p>For thirteen years.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa had sat at our table.<\/p>\n<p>Held me as a baby.<\/p>\n<p>Helped Mom through grief.<\/p>\n<p>And never told her.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas whispered, \u201cSamuel knew.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s face went blank.<\/p>\n<p>I waited for anger.<\/p>\n<p>It came differently.<\/p>\n<p>She sat down.<\/p>\n<p>Very slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cI loved him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I took her hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe loved me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd he lied every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>All three things could be true.<\/p>\n<p>The sentence we had spent days learning.<\/p>\n<p>Richard\u2019s letter had one final paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel believed one day Chloe would have to decide whether to expose all of us. If that day comes, tell her this: do not protect our reputations. We had our choices.
