DNA rapid test. Childhood injury records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow is he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnnoying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom smiled.<\/p>\n<p>That sounded promising.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants to talk to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew was connected.<\/p>\n<p>Elena too.<\/p>\n<p>James appeared on secure video.<\/p>\n<p>He looked into the camera.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes stopped on Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou survived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas replied, \u201cSo did you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently we were both bad at dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom muttered, \u201cIt\u2019s contagious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Then he saw Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>His expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond\u2019s boy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew answered, \u201cJames.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou look like him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew actually laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes sat beside his father but not back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James placed a small metal case on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard Cole was arrested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still monitor succession.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat shouldn\u2019t be possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father taught me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Michael activated as Bishop, I knew the system had reached the condition I built.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes asked, \u201cYou expected me to accept?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hoped you wouldn\u2019t have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you nominated me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo give you the authority to end it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could\u2019ve come back years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James looked at his son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No excuse.<\/p>\n<p>That silence echoed Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe missing fathers eventually ran out of justifications.<\/p>\n<p>James opened the case.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were paper files.<\/p>\n<p>Actual paper.<\/p>\n<p>Elena leaned closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are those?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond Mercer\u2019s original succession records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew went pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose were destroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father told me\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour father lied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James removed a ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Old.<\/p>\n<p>Black cover.<\/p>\n<p>Worn corners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe network before page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond kept two versions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne operational.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne private.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInsurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course.<\/p>\n<p>James had stolen the private ledger before turning against the network.<\/p>\n<p>It contained handwritten records no software purge could alter.<\/p>\n<p>Payments.<\/p>\n<p>Orders.<\/p>\n<p>Names.<\/p>\n<p>And something Matthew had never seen.<\/p>\n<p>Archivist succession.<\/p>\n<p>Elias Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Then a third name.<\/p>\n<p>Not Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone froze.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James held the page closer.<\/p>\n<p>The third Archivist was listed as:<\/p>\n<p>ELENA WARD.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stood.<\/p>\n<p>Elena did not move.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew\u2019s voice sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father chose Elena?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConditional successor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elena whispered, \u201cI never accepted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t need to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew looked furious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI inherited Archivist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou inherited the systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is the Archivist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond didn\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elena stared at the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen did he write that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Colorado.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou met Raymond?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another secret.<\/p>\n<p>But Elena looked less defensive than usual.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe offered me the role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he knew Matthew was becoming too attached to preserving the network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew recoiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father trusted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe loved you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>That hurt Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>Elena explained.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond believed the Archivist should eventually destroy the system.<\/p>\n<p>Not maintain it forever.<\/p>\n<p>Elias created the role to preserve records.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond transformed it into control.<\/p>\n<p>Then regretted what it became.<\/p>\n<p>He saw Elena as someone willing to expose it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou refused,\u201d Thomas said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause accepting authority over a criminal system would make me part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes looked at her through the video.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFamiliar argument.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elena nodded.<\/p>\n<p>James continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond entered your name anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Elena is the legal Archivist under legacy rules, my authentication cannot dissolve Bishop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCorrect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Everything we had planned broke.<\/p>\n<p>We needed three approvals.<\/p>\n<p>Active Bishop:<\/p>\n<p>Michael Hayes.<\/p>\n<p>Final consent:<\/p>\n<p>Me.<\/p>\n<p>Archivist:<\/p>\n<p>Not Matthew.<\/p>\n<p>Elena.<\/p>\n<p>She stared at the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will not authenticate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause accepting the role activates inheritance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat inheritance?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Elena answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery Archivist receives full access.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds useful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Protected identities.<\/p>\n<p>Blackmail.<\/p>\n<p>Medical records.<\/p>\n<p>Crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Families.<\/p>\n<p>Every secret.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd once I authenticate,\u201d she said, \u201cthe system recognizes me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Matthew loses control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elena turned to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may trigger his contingency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat beside Elena\u2019s succession entry.<\/p>\n<p>IF SUCCESSOR WARD ACTIVATES, MERCER LINE REVOKED.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew whispered, \u201cRevoked how?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>The answer made him close the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes said, \u201cRead it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatthew\u2019s protected status terminates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have protected status.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince when?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBirth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diane.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond had protected his son from the network from the day he was born.<\/p>\n<p>But if Elena became Archivist, that protection ended.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew\u2019s legal identities, hidden accounts, and system shields would collapse.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTermination order?\u201d Mom asked.<\/p>\n<p>James checked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut every agency record he altered to protect himself becomes visible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes said, \u201cMeaning we can arrest him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew sat slowly.<\/p>\n<p>He had spent years believing he controlled the system.<\/p>\n<p>His father had left a mechanism to remove him.<\/p>\n<p>Elena looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew none of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Matthew seemed genuinely powerless.<\/p>\n<p>James closed the ledger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody wanted more.<\/p>\n<p>He gave it anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond added one final condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Elena refuses succession after activation is available, Archivist authority transfers to the nearest eligible Mercer heir.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James looked directly into the camera.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Not because it was funny.<\/p>\n<p>Because the alternative was screaming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not a Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel went pale.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James said quietly, \u201cRachel, Samuel never told her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTold me what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane wasn\u2019t Grandpa\u2019s sister-in-law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was his half sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That still did not make me a Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Then Mom continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDiane\u2019s mother had two children before she married into the Bennett family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRaymond Mercer was Samuel\u2019s half brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My great-uncle.<\/p>\n<p>The Mercer line and Bennett line were the same family.<\/p>\n<p>Which meant I carried both.<\/p>\n<p>James looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder Raymond\u2019s succession rules, you are eligible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas slammed his hand against the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I barely heard him.<\/p>\n<p>The system had spent generations moving through families.<\/p>\n<p>Cole.<\/p>\n<p>Mercer.<\/p>\n<p>Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes.<\/p>\n<p>Adults inheriting secrets they never asked for.<\/p>\n<p>Now it had reached
