chair.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>Blood spreading from his shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>His gun several feet away.<\/p>\n<p>State officers restrained him.<\/p>\n<p>One guard had surrendered.<\/p>\n<p>Another was wounded.<\/p>\n<p>The third lay face-down with hands cuffed.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes retrieved a small black drive from Cole\u2019s coat.<\/p>\n<p>Henderson laughed weakly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s your ledger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas helped me stand.<\/p>\n<p>My knees shook.<\/p>\n<p>Henderson looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to hug him.<\/p>\n<p>Instead I said, \u201cYou scared me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could\u2019ve told us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas looked at Henderson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said Elena inserted the Archivist\u2019s identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henderson\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never saw the file.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cole laughed from the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Every face turned toward him.<\/p>\n<p>Blood stained his shirt.<\/p>\n<p>He looked almost relieved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes crouched.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cole smiled at Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBishop was never the dangerous part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas\u2019s face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>Cole continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Archivist built Bishop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery Bishop. Every successor. Every scandal. Every secret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes held up the black drive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen the name is here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cole\u2019s smile widened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henderson went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cole looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI destroyed the name years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said, \u201cYou couldn\u2019t.
