Henderson\u2019s kitchen vent.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes looked at Ortiz through the open door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cState police searched the apartment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe they missed something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He called.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-two minutes later, an investigator removed the kitchen vent cover.<\/p>\n<p>Behind it was a digital recorder.<\/p>\n<p>Not hidden very well.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden so only someone who knew where to look would find it quickly.<\/p>\n<p>The final recording had been made less than an hour before Ruiz was attacked.<\/p>\n<p>Henderson\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re hearing this, then something went wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>It was strange hearing him without seeing him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was told years ago that if Samuel\u2019s box was ever opened, I should watch the hallway and wait for contact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes froze the recording.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy whom?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He resumed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel never told me everything. Thomas told me less. That was deliberate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cDad trusted him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henderson continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight, Ruiz arrived asking questions about Rachel\u2019s apartment. He showed proper identification, but he kept looking toward Samuel\u2019s old storage locker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStorage locker?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We didn\u2019t know about one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked why. He drew his weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>The recording continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI struck him with the ceramic lamp beside my door. His gun discharged into the wall. He went down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That explained the head injury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took the weapon because I heard someone on the stairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The photograph showed Henderson holding Ruiz\u2019s pistol.<\/p>\n<p>Not his.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believed they were coming for the girl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom covered her face.<\/p>\n<p>Henderson\u2019s voice became rougher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI left because Thomas\u2019s old instruction was clear. If police turn on each other, do not stay near Rachel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then came something we did not expect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know who the Keeper was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes stopped breathing.<\/p>\n<p>Was.<\/p>\n<p>Past tense.<\/p>\n<p>He played the next sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel Bennett.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom recoiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa.<\/p>\n<p>The Keeper.<\/p>\n<p>Impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Henderson continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot the network\u2019s Keeper. The other one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes frowned.<\/p>\n<p>The other one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamuel used their structure against them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henderson spoke faster now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe built his own ledger. Names. Dates. Payments. Connections. Everything Thomas and Elena learned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cDad kept a copy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe network thought the Keeper was one of theirs.
