Her car was found at O\u2019Hare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid police think she ran?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were theories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny body?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I felt sick.<\/p>\n<p>Two people disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>Two bodies never found.<\/p>\n<p>One retired detective now missing.<\/p>\n<p>One wealthy family connected through old financial crimes.<\/p>\n<p>Aunt Valerie helping Derek.<\/p>\n<p>It was beginning to feel less like uncovering a secret and more like stepping into something unfinished.<\/p>\n<p>At 6:08, Hayes received another call.<\/p>\n<p>He listened.<\/p>\n<p>His expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d Mom asked.<\/p>\n<p>He ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey recovered partial records from Vale\u2019s broken phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne number appears repeatedly over the last six months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhose?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt belongs to a prepaid phone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat tells us nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut yesterday afternoon, that phone connected to a cell tower near your school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p>Mom turned white.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween two thirty and three fifteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was supposed to be at school yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same time I would normally have been leaving.<\/p>\n<p>Someone with a phone connected to Martin Vale had been near my school.<\/p>\n<p>Mom grabbed my shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas anyone following Chloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want more than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes\u2019s own frustration showed now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchool security footage is being pulled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Henderson stood and closed the blinds.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, Mom did not object.<\/p>\n<p>At 7:02, the footage arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes watched it on his laptop.<\/p>\n<p>Then replayed one section.<\/p>\n<p>A black SUV sat across from the school entrance.<\/p>\n<p>At 2:51, the driver stepped out.<\/p>\n<p>Male.<\/p>\n<p>Baseball cap.<\/p>\n<p>Sunglasses.<\/p>\n<p>Older.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes zoomed in.<\/p>\n<p>The image was blurry.<\/p>\n<p>But not blurry enough.<\/p>\n<p>He leaned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMartin Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>Vale had been waiting outside my school hours after Aunt Valerie planted the bracelet.<\/p>\n<p>If I had gone to class like normal, I would have walked directly past him.<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would he have done?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>Then Hayes\u2019s phone rang again.<\/p>\n<p>This time he listened without speaking.<\/p>\n<p>His face changed completely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey found Vale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom rose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlive?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief hit for half a second.<\/p>\n<p>Then I saw his expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s injured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere was he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn abandoned maintenance garage near the river.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan he talk?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes picked up his coat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reached the door, then turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd before the ambulance took him, he said one sentence clearly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew somehow that I would hate it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018Tell Chloe her father didn\u2019t abandon her.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31431\">Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Martin Vale Finally Spoke About My Father, but the Truth Made His Thirteen-Year Silence Look Even More Suspicious<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By noon, Liberty Trust Bank had stopped feeling like a vault and started feeling like a target.
