His papers. His keys. Everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat apartment came with the mortgage balance and his medical debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou got to be the responsible one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe good daughter. Rachel fixes everything. Rachel sacrifices everything. Photographed the bracelet in place. Documented removal. Wore new gloves. Sealed it immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie\u2019s confidence flickered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the hallway footage places you inside the apartment shortly before that documentation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was checking on Chloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou just said you believed Chloe was at school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie\u2019s lips pressed together.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes closed his notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMs. Lawson, I\u2019d like you to come with us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAm I under arrest?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the moment, you are being detained while we investigate possession and placement of stolen property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A uniformed officer stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>Valerie looked around wildly.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes landed on Mom.<\/p>\n<p>Something strange happened then.<\/p>\n<p>Her panic vanished.<\/p>\n<p>She smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Not warmly.<\/p>\n<p>Not confidently.<\/p>\n<p>It was the expression of someone who had just remembered she possessed one last weapon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou really want to do this, Rachel?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou tried to send me to prison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie nodded toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen maybe Chloe deserves to know what you\u2019ve been hiding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s hand tightened on my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t,\u201d Mom said.<\/p>\n<p>But she wasn\u2019t speaking to me.<\/p>\n<p>She was speaking to Valerie.<\/p>\n<p>That frightened me.<\/p>\n<p>Valerie saw it.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time since Mr. Henderson appeared, she looked pleased.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gave a small laugh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you still haven\u2019t told her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes watched Mom now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTold her what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk your mother about Grandpa\u2019s safety deposit box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Mom.<\/p>\n<p>She had gone pale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie\u2019s smile widened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNumber forty-seven.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom closed her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I had never seen her look afraid of Valerie before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s in it?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one is discussing this here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause this has nothing to do with today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s where you\u2019re wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes\u2019s attention sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would a family safety deposit box matter to stolen jewelry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie looked directly at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Rachel\u2019s father spent years hiding things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cValerie,\u201d Mom warned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDocuments. Keys.
