Diamonds ran along an intricate white-metal chain, broken at intervals by deep green stones. That wasn\u2019t lying for your own benefit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It did not make me feel much better.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later his phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>The caller identified himself as Detective Michael Hayes.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Henderson put the call on speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Hayes listened without interruption while he summarized what had happened.<\/p>\n<p>Then the detective asked for me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Henderson says you\u2019re thirteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to ask you only a few basic questions right now. Don\u2019t guess. If you don\u2019t remember something, tell me you don\u2019t remember. Understood?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I liked him immediately for saying that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat time did your aunt enter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEleven eighteen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did she get in?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe used a key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she know you were home?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said on the phone that I was at school.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a short silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me exactly what you heard regarding your mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I repeated the phrases.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight.<\/p>\n<p>Search the bag.<\/p>\n<p>Arrested in front of Chloe.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel won\u2019t look like a saint anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Detective Hayes\u2019s tone changed after that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Henderson, do not surrender the bracelet to anyone except a uniformed officer or detective who can show department identification. But I can tell you officers will be nearby before your mother arrives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I respected him more for correcting himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat should I do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay with Mr. Henderson. Do not contact your aunt. Do not post anything online. Don\u2019t tell friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Chloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou noticed something important and asked for help instead of trying to handle it alone. Keep doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the call ended, I finally sat down.<\/p>\n<p>My legs had gone weak.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Henderson made grilled cheese sandwiches neither of us really ate.<\/p>\n<p>While the afternoon dragged on, I kept replaying memories of Aunt Valerie.<\/p>\n<p>Christmas dinners.<\/p>\n<p>Birthday cards.<\/p>\n<p>The time she taught me to braid my own hair.<\/p>\n<p>The cheap purple headphones she bought me after mine broke.<\/p>\n<p>People in stories became villains all at once. More importantly, we know exactly where the evidence has been since removal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He checked his watch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe anonymous caller claimed Rachel would be returning home with the stolen jewelry after work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo police are supposed to search her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My hands turned cold.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes crouched slightly so we were eye level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChloe, when your mother arrives, officers may approach her. She may be frightened.
