Outside the narrow glass panel, officers crossed the hallway carrying folders and paper cups, completely unaware that the four of us inside had just been told one of their colleagues might be connected to a thirteen-year conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p>Mom finally broke the silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou believe him?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes looked at her phone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe someone who knows private details about you claims Bishop is still inside the department.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn\u2019t my question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He rubbed his jaw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t automatically believe anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncluding Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIncluding your father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer irritated me, but it was the correct one.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz moved away from the door. \u201cWe need to determine who knew the box was opened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes took out his notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUs. Bank personnel. Evidence technicians. The officers assigned to Rachel and Chloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd whoever watched Liberty Trust,\u201d Mom added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about your supervisors?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes stopped writing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI notified Captain Warren.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz\u2019s eyes lifted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmediately after we opened the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The silence returned.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes noticed our expressions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWarren has supervised me for eight years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom folded her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Valerie was my sister for thirty-six.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes gave a slow nod.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoint taken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He removed his department phone from his pocket, powered it off, and placed it on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz did the same.<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>I switched off mine.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes asked, \u201cDoes Thomas know your current number?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI changed it three years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmail?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe address he contacted isn\u2019t one I had when he disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo he found you recently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApparently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr someone with access to current records found you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still think it could be someone pretending to be Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe blue cups?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStrong evidence. Not proof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat would be proof?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom\u2019s voice had sharpened.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething only Thomas could know that can also be independently verified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought about the email.<\/p>\n<p>Then something bothered me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said we opened the box too soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow could it be too soon?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa made the box mine after he died. Derek tried to get into it. Valerie planted the bracelet. We opened it because people were already coming after us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Hayes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what was Dad waiting for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody answered.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz pulled a chair beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a good question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the box was an alarm, there had to be a right time to open it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr another trigger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa\u2019s notebook was in evidence processing upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes wanted it back.<\/p>\n<p>He did not call the evidence room.<\/p>\n<p>Instead he left with Ortiz, returning twelve minutes later carrying the sealed notebook himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did you tell them?\u201d Mom asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat I needed to verify a date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid anyone question it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That seemed to worry him.<\/p>\n<p>We spread photocopies of Grandpa\u2019s pages across the table.<\/p>\n<p>Most entries were practical.<\/p>\n<p>Dates.<\/p>\n<p>Addresses.<\/p>\n<p>Names.<\/p>\n<p>Descriptions of cars.<\/p>\n<p>But near the final pages, Grandpa\u2019s writing changed.<\/p>\n<p>The sentences became shorter.<\/p>\n<p>More personal.<\/p>\n<p>T.B. must decide for himself.<\/p>\n<p>C. cannot inherit this burden without a choice.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>47 opens only after the bell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat bell?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>Mom shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes turned the page.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The next sheet contained grocery expenses and a dentist appointment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa did that intentionally,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHid important things beside boring things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa had kept birthday money in an envelope marked appliance receipts because he said burglars had no interest in refrigerators.<\/p>\n<p>I searched the mundane entries more carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Two pages later:<\/p>\n<p>Replace kitchen clock. Bell stopped at 7:14.<\/p>\n<p>My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes leaned over.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven fourteen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould be a time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr a date,\u201d Ortiz said.<\/p>\n<p>July fourteenth.<\/p>\n<p>7\/14.<\/p>\n<p>Mom suddenly stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThomas\u2019s birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJuly fourteenth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes wrote it down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo \u2018after the bell\u2019 might mean after Thomas\u2019s birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut which year?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one knew.<\/p>\n<p>We kept searching.<\/p>\n<p>Near the back, Grandpa had written:<\/p>\n<p>When C. can remember the lake without being told.<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat lake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom went very still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLake Geneva.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took you when you were little.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow little?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I barely remembered it.<\/p>\n<p>A dock.<\/p>\n<p>Cold water.<\/p>\n<p>Someone buying me strawberry ice cream.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa holding my sandals.<\/p>\n<p>Then another memory surfaced.<\/p>\n<p>A bell.<\/p>\n<p>Not a clock.<\/p>\n<p>A large brass bell mounted outside a marina restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>Children rang it when boats returned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember the bell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the lake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI rang it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou do remember.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa lifted me up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The memory strengthened as I spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me I had to pull the rope twice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom sat slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked you afterward whether you would remember that day forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did remember that.<\/p>\n<p>Not because it seemed important then.<\/p>\n<p>Because Grandpa had been unusually serious.<\/p>\n<p>He had crouched beside me on the dock and said, \u201cSometimes remembering is a job, Chloe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I had laughed because I thought jobs meant getting paid.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes tapped the notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen was that trip?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSummer. Around Thomas\u2019s birthday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYear?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen Chloe was four.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same year as the Montana postcard.<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if Dad was there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrandpa got a postcard saying I had your eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe could have seen me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her resistance weakened.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes asked, \u201cDo you have photographs from the trip?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our apartment was still being processed.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes sent Ortiz with two trusted officers to retrieve the family photo box.<\/p>\n<p>She returned forty minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>Mom found the Lake Geneva envelope immediately.<\/p>\n<p>There were seventeen photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Me on the dock.<\/p>\n<p>Me eating ice cream.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa sitting beside the water.<\/p>\n<p>Mom wearing sunglasses.<\/p>\n<p>Then photograph fourteen.<\/p>\n<p>I was ringing the marina bell.<\/p>\n<p>Grandpa held me around the waist.<\/p>\n<p>Behind us stood dozens of tourists.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes studied the background.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCould Thomas be one of them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom took the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers started trembling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I moved beside her.<\/p>\n<p>She pointed.<\/p>\n<p>A man stood near the marina office.<\/p>\n<p>Only half his face was visible.<\/p>\n<p>Dark hair.<\/p>\n<p>Sunglasses.<\/p>\n<p>Older than the father in my framed photograph, but not by much.<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cThat\u2019s him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My chest tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re sure?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spent six years waking up beside that man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes scanned the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need this enlarged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom barely heard him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe saw you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the tiny figure.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had been perhaps thirty yards away.<\/p>\n<p>I had been four.<\/p>\n<p>He had watched Grandpa lift me to ring a bell.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he had watched me eat strawberry ice cream.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe he had wanted to walk across the dock.<\/p>\n<p>And he hadn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Anger and longing tangled until I couldn\u2019t separate them.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ortiz turned over the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Something was written on the back.<\/p>\n<p>Not Grandpa\u2019s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>One sentence.<\/p>\n<p>When she remembers this day, she can choose.<\/p>\n<p>Mom sat down.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe box wasn\u2019t supposed to be opened because Derek wanted it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I understood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was supposed to be opened when I was old enough to remember Dad\u2019s signal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I didn\u2019t know it was a signal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked again at the picture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat choice?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That remained unanswered.<\/p>\n<p>At 6:12, Mom\u2019s powered-down phone began vibrating.<\/p>\n<p>We all stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s impossible,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The screen remained black.<\/p>\n<p>The vibration came again.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes picked it up without turning it on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may be an alarm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t use alarms when the phone is off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The vibration stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Then my phone, also powered down, buzzed once.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBattery out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy battery doesn\u2019t come out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen wrap it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes placed both phones inside signal-blocking evidence bags.<\/p>\n<p>A minute later, an officer knocked.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes opened the door only a few inches.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDelivery for Rachel Bennett.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nobody had ordered anything.<\/p>\n<p>The officer held a padded envelope.<\/p>\n<p>No return address.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes took it using gloves.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a printed photograph.<\/p>\n<p>The same Lake Geneva marina.<\/p>\n<p>Taken from a different angle.<\/p>\n<p>I was visible beside Grandpa.<\/p>\n<p>Mom was buying ice cream.<\/p>\n<p>And in the foreground stood Thomas Bennett.<\/p>\n<p>My father.<\/p>\n<p>He was looking directly toward the camera.<\/p>\n<p>On the back were four handwritten words.<\/p>\n<p>YOU REMEMBER THE BELL.<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cThat\u2019s his writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes examined the envelope.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow did this get here?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCourier dropped it downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho signed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDescription?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBike helmet. Face covering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes looked furious.<\/p>\n<p>The photograph had not been mailed.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had physically delivered it to the police station.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who knew exactly where we were.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ortiz noticed something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tiny digits were printed along the bottom edge of the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Not a phone number.<\/p>\n<p>Coordinates.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes entered them into an offline map.<\/p>\n<p>A location appeared in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p>Lake Geneva.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe marina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d Hayes said.<\/p>\n<p>He zoomed in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout three miles north.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The coordinates marked a patch of wooded land.<\/p>\n<p>A structure appeared on satellite imagery.<\/p>\n<p>Small.<\/p>\n<p>Isolated.<\/p>\n<p>A cabin.<\/p>\n<p>Then the conference-room lights went out.<\/p>\n<p>Only for three seconds.<\/p>\n<p>But in those three seconds, someone tried the locked door.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes drew his weapon.<\/p>\n<p>The lights returned.<\/p>\n<p>The hallway outside was empty.<\/p>\n<p>On the floor beneath the door lay a folded piece of paper.<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz opened it with gloves.<\/p>\n<p>One sentence.<\/p>\n<p>DON\u2019T FOLLOW THE COORDINATES.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>Mom whispered, \u201cWhich message do we trust?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the photograph from my father.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the warning pushed beneath a locked police-station door.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I understood the choice Grandpa had left me.<\/p>\n<p>The evidence could tell us where to look.<\/p>\n<p>It could never tell us whom to trust.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31363\">Click here to continue reading: PART 10: We Followed My Father\u2019s Coordinates Without Telling the Precinct, and Found a Cabin Someone Had Abandoned Minutes Earlier<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hayes kept the conference-room door locked.
