Thomas ran.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hated hearing it phrased that way.<\/p>\n<p>Ran.<\/p>\n<p>As though leaving us had been a simple choice.<\/p>\n<p>At 2:17, a technician entered with a first.<\/p>\n<p>Inside were scanned letters.<\/p>\n<p>None newer than nine years.<\/p>\n<p>Two were from Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>Three were from Grandpa.<\/p>\n<p>None included addresses.<\/p>\n<p>Each letter had apparently been delivered through intermediaries.<\/p>\n<p>The last one from Thomas was dated eight years and nine months ago.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at the date.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had been alive when I was four.<\/p>\n<p>The letter was short.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel,<\/p>\n<p>Do not search for me again.<\/p>\n<p>They found Edward.<\/p>\n<p>They know about Elena.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel and Chloe are safer if everyone believes I am gone.<\/p>\n<p>Destroy anything that leads west.<\/p>\n<p>If Chloe ever asks whether I loved her, tell her I stayed away because I did.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stopped \u201credirect investigative exposure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another listed payments through Northstar.<\/p>\n<p>Then Ortiz found a photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes froze the screen.<\/p>\n<p>Four men stood outside a restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Kensington.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Vale.<\/p>\n<p>Two others.<\/p>\n<p>Vale was younger but unmistakable.<\/p>\n<p>One of the other men He\u2019ll come to us eventually.<\/p>\n<p>Vale had not stumbled into danger.<\/p>\n<p>They had been watching him too.<\/p>\n<p>The next message was from yesterday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Derek: Valerie is inside.<\/p>\n<p>B: Confirm placement.<\/p>\n<p>Derek: Done.<\/p>\n<p>B: Then wait.<\/p>\n<p>My skin prickled.<\/p>\n<p>Someone had been coordinating events in real time.<\/p>\n<p>Then came a message from 11:43.<\/p>\n<p>Derek: Anonymous tip made.<\/p>\n<p>B: Good.<\/p>\n<p>And another at 6:31.<\/p>\n<p>Derek: Problem.<\/p>\n<p>B: Explain.<\/p>\n<p>Derek: Bracelet wasn\u2019t in Rachel\u2019s bag.<\/p>\n<p>B: Leave.<\/p>\n<p>Derek: Valerie is detained.<\/p>\n<p>B: LEAVE NOW.<\/p>\n<p>That explained Derek\u2019s flight.<\/p>\n<p>The messages ended there.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes stared at the screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhoever B is, they knew the plan had failed almost immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom said, \u201cMeaning someone at the scene told them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr Valerie did before her phone was taken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWas her phone taken?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen check it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 3:46, the fourth man in the old restaurant photograph was identified.<\/p>\n<p>His name was Patrick Harlan.<\/p>\n<p>Former accountant.<\/p>\n<p>Former vice president of finance for Kensington Holdings.<\/p>\n<p>Missing for twelve years.<\/p>\n<p>No body ever found.<\/p>\n<p>Another missing person.<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many people vanished around this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Thomas\u2019s folder again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan we search the letters for Harlan?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ortiz did.<\/p>\n<p>One result.<\/p>\n<p>A scanned note from Grandpa.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Harlan contacted me. Claims Thomas saved his life.
