I thought he was giving Rachel money behind my back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you followed him to a bank?\u201d Hayes asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd learned about Box 47?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard him mention the number.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you ever access it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Derek know about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>That hesitation mattered.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes stood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell Derek about the box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI might have mentioned it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause Derek was asking questions about Rachel\u2019s family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat questions?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout Thomas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name struck the room like a physical object.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes lowered himself back into his chair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy was Derek interested in a man who disappeared thirteen years ago?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie rubbed her wrists where the cuffs had been.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said an old financial problem had resurfaced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat problem?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou agreed to plant stolen property for this man, yet you expect us to believe you never asked what he was doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe paid me not to ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou gave him information about Thomas?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie looked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout Dad\u2019s box?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout Chloe?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie finally met her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know this would happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom stood so quickly the chair scraped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou walked into my house and planted evidence that could put me in prison.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRachel\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter was there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is not better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hayes stepped between them.<\/p>\n<p>An officer appeared at the door and whispered something into his ear.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward Arthur Kensington first.<\/p>\n<p>Then Valerie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDerek has been located.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur closed his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttempting to leave the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie\u2019s face drained.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOfficers recovered two phones, a laptop, cash, and documents from his vehicle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie whispered something I couldn\u2019t hear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d Hayes asked.<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>I heard it the second time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wasn\u2019t supposed to run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentence told Hayes more than she intended.<\/p>\n<p>He leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat was he supposed to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Valerie refused to answer.<\/p>\n<p>Mom sat beside me again.<\/p>\n<p>I felt as if the room were tilting.<\/p>\n<p>This morning I had been worried about a history test.<\/p>\n<p>Now a stolen bracelet had connected my aunt to a jewelry heir and somehow reopened questions about my father\u2019s disappearance.<\/p>\n<p>Hayes shut his notebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll need access to Safety Deposit Box 47.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom nodded slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the box is legally under Chloe\u2019s name, the bank may require her involvement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My involvement.<\/p>\n<p>I tried to imagine Grandpa placing something inside a metal drawer years earlier, knowing that one day I might open it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if there\u2019s nothing there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mom squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen we finally know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if there is?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked toward Valerie.<\/p>\n<p>Her sister had stopped arguing.<\/p>\n<p>Stopped smiling.<\/p>\n<p>Stopped blaming anyone.<\/p>\n<p>She was staring at the floor with an expression I had never seen before.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>Mom answered quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen maybe your grandfather spent thirteen years protecting a truth somebody still wants buried.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31358\">Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Bank Manager Opened Box Forty-Seven, and My Grandfather\u2019s First Envelope Was Addressed to Me by Name<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For most of my life, my father had existed as a photograph.
