continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt says he was scared, but he wanted to bring Elias home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn\u2019t he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the part I don\u2019t understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause the note ends with a sentence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat sentence?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire read it.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow I\u2019m telling Mother no.<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, according to every record we had, Julian signed the placement authorization.<\/p>\n<p>Something had happened between those two moments.<\/p>\n<p>And if Julian had once intended to refuse Margaret before suddenly changing course, then the oldest question in Elias\u2019s story was still unanswered.<\/p>\n<p>Not whether Julian
