noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can meet him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not as evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Not as part of a case.<\/p>\n<p>As family.<\/p>\n<p>I wiped my face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow, if he still wants to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Julian looked toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Then Milo.<\/p>\n<p>He did not ask to come.<\/p>\n<p>That mattered too.<\/p>\n<p>Before the call ended, the detective at Grayhaven returned with another sealed envelope.<\/p>\n<p>It had been found inside Victor\u2019s old file cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>Addressed to Laura Collins.<\/p>\n<p>Never mailed.<\/p>\n<p>My mother.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting belonged to Michael.<\/p>\n<p>The date was twenty-one years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>He would have been ten.<\/p>\n<p>I asked them to open it on camera.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a single page written in uneven block letters.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the message was simple.<\/p>\n<p>He liked trains.<\/p>\n<p>He liked grilled cheese.<\/p>\n<p>He had learned to swim.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the last two sentences.<\/p>\n<p>Please tell Maya I did not go away because I did not love her.<\/p>\n<p>I want to meet her when we are big.<\/p>\n<p>I pressed my hand over my mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, we would both be big.<\/p>\n<p>And for once in this story, someone who had been hidden was not going to stay hidden because another
