Margaret away for the summer.”

Everyone turned.

The voice came from Caroline’s phone.

Rebecca.

She was awake.

Caroline moved closer to her hospital bed.

“Rebecca?”

The older sister none of them had known existed looked toward the screen with unfocused eyes.

She repeated slowly, “Margaret went away.”

Margaret stared at the tablet.

Rebecca had not even been born when Daniel was.

But she may have heard family stories during years hidden from everyone else.

Caroline asked gently, “Who told you that?”

Rebecca’s eyes moved.

“Danny.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

Rebecca smiled faintly.

“Danny said Aunt Margaret cried.”

No one spoke.

Julian whispered, “Daniel knew Rebecca.”

Rebecca’s smile disappeared.

“Danny was nice.”

Margaret began shaking.

Not subtly.

Not controlled.

“Maggie,” Rebecca said suddenly.

Margaret looked at the screen.

Rebecca lifted one hand toward it.

“Don’t cry.”

The room went silent around them.

Then the detective’s voice returned from Grayhaven.

“We found Sarah.”

Martin stood so quickly his chair scraped through the phone audio.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

Relief broke across his voice.

“Is she hurt?”

“No apparent injury.”

“Victor?”

Another pause.

“Yes.”

Nathan froze.

“My father is there?”

“Yes.”

“Is he under arrest?”

“Not currently.”

“Why?”

“Because he’s the one who let officers through the rear gate.”

Nathan sat.

The detective continued.

“Victor says he brought Sarah here to keep Daniel from taking her.”

Rachel frowned.

“Why not call police?”

“He says he didn’t know who Daniel had compromised.”

Nathan covered his face.

His father was alive.

Sarah was alive.

The hidden facility had been found.

But the detective had one more thing.

“Victor says he’ll cooperate.”

“With conditions?”

“One.”

Rachel’s mouth tightened.

“What?”

“He wants Margaret present.”

Margaret looked up.

“Why?”

“He says there’s something in the chapel records only she can identify.”

“What?”

The detective relayed Victor’s exact answer.

“The name of Daniel Kessler’s father.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

And this time, when she whispered no, it sounded less like refusal than recognition.
