For implying you were unstable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked your father for advice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sounds dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbout what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My muscles tightened again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Dad say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat if Liam wanted advice about you, he should ask you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen Liam asked a different question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother\u2019s voice softened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe asked how your father learned to stop being angry when he was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went silent.<\/p>\n<p>My father had struggled with anger when I was young.<\/p>\n<p>Not violence.<\/p>\n<p>Pride.<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Defensiveness.<\/p>\n<p>Years of learning to apologize.<\/p>\n<p>Liam knew some of that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did Dad say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat he didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said he still gets angry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My mother laughed softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe just stopped treating anger as proof he was right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat on the edge of my bed.<\/p>\n<p>That sounded like my father.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey talked for almost an hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked toward the window.<\/p>\n<p>Something about that moved me more than therapy.<\/p>\n<p>Not because my father had wisdom Liam needed.<\/p>\n<p>Because Liam had sought help from someone who had nothing to gain by flattering him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Dad invite him into our lives again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told Liam very clearly that whether you forgive him is your business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Liam agreed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat quietly.<\/p>\n<p>My mother asked, \u201cDoes that make you happy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes that scare you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy good?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you\u2019re paying attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After we hung up, I opened Sarah\u2019s photograph from the barbecue.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, I allowed myself to imagine trying again.<\/p>\n<p>Not moving in.<\/p>\n<p>Not undoing the breakup.<\/p>\n<p>A date.<\/p>\n<p>One date.<\/p>\n<p>The idea made my stomach flip.<\/p>\n<p>I closed the photograph.<\/p>\n<p>Then opened Liam\u2019s contact.<\/p>\n<p>I did not write.<\/p>\n<p>Not yet.<\/p>\n<p>Because wanting something was information.<\/p>\n<p>Not permission.<\/p>\n<p>I had learned that from him.<\/p>\n<p>Or perhaps we were finally learning it separately.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31239\">Click here to continue reading: PART 28: I Chose to Ask Liam on a Real Date, but Before I Could Send the Message He Made a Decision That Changed the Choice Entirely<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David and Elena\u2019s backyard smelled like charcoal, cut grass, and the citrus cleaner Elena used on every outdoor surface.
