I\u2019ll follow your lead.<\/p>\n<p>No enthusiasm spilling over the edges.<\/p>\n<p>No declaration.<\/p>\n<p>No \u201cI knew you\u2019d come around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just acceptance.<\/p>\n<p>We chose Saturday at eleven.<\/p>\n<p>The coffee shop near my apartment, but not close enough to reveal where I lived.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday arrived.<\/p>\n<p>I dressed three times.<\/p>\n<p>Then got angry with myself and wore jeans.<\/p>\n<p>Liam was already there when I arrived.<\/p>\n<p>He stood when he saw me.<\/p>\n<p>I sat before he could decide whether to hug me.<\/p>\n<p>He sat too.<\/p>\n<p>For several seconds, neither of us spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then he smiled faintly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is weird.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That broke something.<\/p>\n<p>Not the distance.<\/p>\n<p>The stiffness.<\/p>\n<p>We ordered coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Then faced each other across a small wooden table.<\/p>\n<p>No friends.<\/p>\n<p>No witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>No party.<\/p>\n<p>No argument already underway.<\/p>\n<p>Just two people who had loved each other and had no idea what shape remained after the damage.<\/p>\n<p>Liam wrapped both hands around his cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI promised myself I wouldn\u2019t ask what this means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m already failing internally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInternally is allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He nodded.<\/p>\n<p>Then became serious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you want to talk about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat used to make you crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I didn\u2019t have an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>He did not defend himself.<\/p>\n<p>Progress should not have surprised me this much.<\/p>\n<p>We talked for forty minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Work.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron.<\/p>\n<p>My apartment without identifying details.<\/p>\n<p>His therapy.<\/p>\n<p>He did not give me therapeutic jargon.<\/p>\n<p>Mostly he described uncomfortable realizations.<\/p>\n<p>He had learned how often he treated another person\u2019s boundary as an accusation.<\/p>\n<p>How quickly shame became anger.<\/p>\n<p>How much he relied on charm after hurting someone because making them feel good seemed easier than repairing what made them feel bad.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat one was unpleasant,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI imagine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always thought being good at apologizing made me good at relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were good at apologies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was good at getting forgiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The distinction sat between us.<\/p>\n<p>I took a drink of coffee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want forgiveness now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Then:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I don\u2019t think asking you for it would be fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was the first moment I wanted to reach across the table.<\/p>\n<p>I did not.<\/p>\n<p>We finished our coffee.<\/p>\n<p>Outside, the afternoon had turned warmer.<\/p>\n<p>At my car, Liam stopped several feet away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor coffee?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor not pretending I never existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou existed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo did the good parts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes became wet.<\/p>\n<p>He looked away.<\/p>\n<p>That nearly undid me.<\/p>\n<p>I opened my car door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know what this is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNeither do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need you not to turn it into a promise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI won\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven if we do this again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I watched his face.<\/p>\n<p>Then nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I drove home.<\/p>\n<p>No message came afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Good.<\/p>\n<p>Then, that evening, I opened my apartment door and saw the blank space beside the crooked artwork.<\/p>\n<p>For one reckless second, I imagined Liam standing there helping me straighten it.<\/p>\n<p>I hated how easy the image came.<\/p>\n<p>Because seeing him had not pulled me backward.<\/p>\n<p>It had done something more complicated.<\/p>\n<p>It had made the future uncertain again.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31235\">Click here to continue reading: PART 24: A Second Coffee With Liam Felt Almost Easy Until He Told Me the One Truth About Jessica He Had Still Been Too Ashamed to Admit<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I did not plan to visit Aaron.
