was terrible.

Not emotionally.

Physically.

My father’s table was solid enough to survive a hurricane, but the bed frame had not arrived.

I slept on the mattress on the floor.

The refrigerator made an intermittent clicking sound.

A streetlight shone directly through a gap in my mother’s crooked curtains.

At two in the morning, someone upstairs dropped something heavy.

At three, pipes groaned in the wall.

At four, I considered returning to Harper’s.

At six, I gave up.

I made coffee in the one mug I had unpacked.

Then carried it onto the balcony.

Morning softened everything.

The courtyard was quiet.

Sunlight warmed the railing.

My body ached from lifting boxes.

I smiled anyway.

No one else’s shoes sat near the door.

No one else’s schedule determined the morning.

No one else could tell me to leave.

At eight, my mother called.

“How was your first night?”

“Awful.”

“What’s unpacking.

Kitchen first.

Then bedroom.

Then books.

When I reached the blue Dutch oven, I placed it on the lower shelf.

I stood there looking at it longer than necessary.

It had become ridiculous symbolically.

A pot should not represent self-respect.

But objects absorb history whether we want them to or not.

I closed the cabinet.

At noon, Jessica texted.

Coffee next week?

I replied:

Yes.

No Liam discussion for first thirty minutes.

She he get defensive?”

“Yes.”

I almost laughed.

David smiled faintly.

“Then he stopped.”

“What changed?”

“He said, ‘I’m doing it again.’”

The sentence landed quietly.

Recognizing a pattern in real time.

That was new.

David pushed away from the wall.

“I’m going.”

“You don’t want water?”

“No.”

“You drove twenty minutes.”

“Elena wants me sat in the quiet apartment.

The dangerous question arrived.

If he really changes, what then?

I did not answer.

The question assumed I needed to.

I didn’t.

Maybe someday Liam would become the partner I had needed.

That did not mean I would be the person partnered with him.

Growth was not retroactive.

At six, I went grocery shopping.

I bought too much.

Then realized half my old habits assumed two people.

Two avocados.

Large milk.

Family-size pasta.

I stood in the aisle holding a twelve-pack of sparkling water and laughed.

A woman nearby gave me a strange look.

“Sorry.”

She moved away.

I bought the smaller package.

Back home, I cooked dinner.

One plate.

One glass.

One chair.

Loneliness appeared around seven-thirty.

Not unbearable.

Just present.

I missed hearing someone else in another room.

I missed calling out a thought without reaching for the phone.

I missed casual intimacy.

Not necessarily Liam.

Companionship.

That distinction comforted me.

I could want partnership without wanting that partnership.

At eight-forty, someone knocked.

Three firm knocks.

My body froze.

I was not expecting anyone.

For several seconds, I did not move.

Then the knock came again.

I approached quietly.

My new door had a peephole.

I looked.

Aaron stood outside.

Liam’s brother.

My entire body tightened.

He held a cardboard box.

I did not open the door.

“Aaron?”

He looked toward the peephole.

“Chloe?”

“How did you get this me.”

“Why?”

“He knows my boss.”

Of course he did.

My father knew a guy.

“Aaron, what are you doing here?”

He lifted the box.

“I brought something Liam found.”

“I asked not to receive messages through you.”

“This isn’t a back.

“I’m sorry.”

He turned toward the stairs.

I watched until he disappeared.

Then waited another minute before opening the door.

The box contained mail.

Nothing else.

Bank statement.

Old magazine.

Insurance letter.

A small package from work.

No hidden note.

No message from
