talking.”

“But Ethan knows?”

“Yes.”

“Does Liam know that?”

“I told him.”

Jessica’s voice tightened.

“He said people hear what they want to hear when they’re jealous.”

That sounded familiar enough to make me nauseous.

“What did Ethan do?”

“He came home while Liam was still there.”

“Oh.”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“Ethan told him to leave.”

“And Liam?”

“He argued.”

“With Ethan?”

“With both of us.”

“About what?”

Jessica laughed once without humor.

“That we were misunderstanding him.”

Of course.

“What finally made him leave?”

“Ethan said he was calling the police.”

I stared through the windshield.

“Did he?”

“No. Liam left.”

Jessica paused.

“Chloe, I’m telling you because he mentioned you.”

“What did he say?”

“He said once everyone sees what you’re really like, you’ll come crawling back.”

My stomach turned.

Jessica continued.

“I don’t think he’s accepted the breakup.”

“I think he understands it.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

No.

It wasn’t.

She took another breath.

“He also said something else.”

I waited.

“He said you always break under pressure.”

My fingers went still.

“What?”

“He said you hate conflict and eventually you’ll do whatever makes the conflict stop.”

For several seconds, I could not speak.

Because that was not a random insult.

It was a strategy.

He knew me.

He knew how much I hated prolonged confrontation.

How quickly I apologized when arguments dragged on.

How often I surrendered a point simply because I was tired.

He was not waiting for me to understand him.

He was waiting for exhaustion.

Jessica must have heard the silence.

“Chloe?”

“I’m here.”

“Don’t let that sentence get in your head.”

“It’s already there.”

“Then put something else beside it.”

“What?”

“That he said the same kind of thing about me after we broke up.”

I closed my eyes.

“What happened?”

“I went back.”

The admission came quietly.

“For how long?”

“Three weeks.”

“Why?”

“Because he made leaving so exhausting that returning felt easier.”

My throat tightened.

Jessica continued.

“I thought going back would stop the calls, the conversations, the mutual friends asking questions.”

“Did it?”

“For three weeks.”

“And then?”

“I remembered why I left.”

The weight of that settled between us.

“So you left again.”

“Yes.”

“Was it worse the second time?”

“Yes.”

Her answer was immediate.

“Because then he knew pressure worked.”

I sat very still.

There it was.

A clue not about Liam’s personality.

About his pattern.

The conflict was not random.

It had a purpose.

Wear me down.

Make separation harder than reconciliation.

Turn peace into something I could obtain only by returning.

Jessica said softly, “I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For not warning you sooner.”

“You didn’t know me.”

“I knew him.”

“That still wasn’t your responsibility.”

We spoke for another minute.

Then she hung up.

I remained in the van.

Harper’s porch light came on automatically as the sky darkened.

My phone stayed silent.

But Liam’s voice filled the quiet anyway.

You’ll feel differently in the morning.

You’re making a mistake.

Actions have consequences.

You always break under pressure.

I looked at the house.

Then at my work bag.

Then at the boxes of belongings still stacked behind the van seats.

He believed time favored him.

He believed exhaustion favored him.

Maybe once, it had.

I opened my documentation file.

At the bottom, I typed one new line.

Jessica reports Liam said: “She always breaks under pressure.”

Then I added another.

Do not make decisions for the purpose of stopping pressure.

I saved the file.

For the first time, I had written something not for evidence.

For myself.

<a
