We can put this behind us.<\/p>\n<p>I closed it.<\/p>\n<p>A minute later, I reopened it.<\/p>\n<p>Not to reread.<\/p>\n<p>To save it.<\/p>\n<p>I forwarded a copy to my personal archive.<\/p>\n<p>Then I took screenshots of the messages from Marcus\u2019s number.<\/p>\n<p>Not because I expected a legal problem.<\/p>\n<p>Because I was tired of being told conversations had happened differently than I remembered.<\/p>\n<p>Evidence had become a form of sanity.<\/p>\n<p>The afternoon passed slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Around five, David texted.<\/p>\n<p>You doing okay?<\/p>\n<p>I answered:<\/p>\n<p>Yes. I was there.<\/p>\n<p>That sentence affected me more than it should have.<\/p>\n<p>I had spent so long doubting whether I was interpreting Liam fairly that simple confirmation felt almost physical.<\/p>\n<p>I put the phone away.<\/p>\n<p>When I finished work, I drove back to Harper\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Her car was in the driveway.<\/p>\n<p>So was another vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>I walked inside.<\/p>\n<p>They were sitting at the kitchen table with takeout containers.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDinner,\u201d Harper said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIntervention,\u201d Sarah said at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>Harper glared at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you not to call it that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah shrugged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has dumplings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I dropped my work bag beside the door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m too tired for an intervention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood,\u201d Harper said. \u201cBecause it\u2019s dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah handed me chopsticks.<\/p>\n<p>For half an hour, we talked about anything except Liam.<\/p>\n<p>Work.<\/p>\n<p>Harper\u2019s neighbor.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah\u2019s disastrous attempt to paint her bathroom.<\/p>\n<p>It felt normal.<\/p>\n<p>Then my email chimed.<\/p>\n<p>All three of us looked at the phone.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah pointed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat better not be him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I checked.<\/p>\n<p>It was.<\/p>\n<p>Another email.<\/p>\n<p>Short this time.<\/p>\n<p>If you refuse to communicate, I\u2019ll have to make decisions about your things here.<\/p>\n<p>My body went still.<\/p>\n<p>Harper noticed immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I showed them.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah read it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat a jerk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harper\u2019s expression became practical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s still at the apartment?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurniture. Couch was split. Dining table was mostly me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReceipts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor some.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah leaned forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s trying to make you come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harper nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the email again.<\/p>\n<p>The wording was calculated.<\/p>\n<p>Not I need to know when you\u2019re collecting things.<\/p>\n<p>Not let\u2019s arrange pickup.<\/p>\n<p>If you refuse.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll have to.<\/p>\n<p>Consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Pressure.<\/p>\n<p>I opened a reply.<\/p>\n<p>Harper raised an eyebrow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you writing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLogistics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I typed:<\/p>\n<p>I will arrange a time to collect the rest of my belongings. Please do not dispose of, damage, or move my personal property. I am not available for an in-person relationship discussion.<\/p>\n<p>I read it twice.<\/p>\n<p>Sent.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was painfully reasonable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My phone chimed almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>His reply:<\/p>\n<p>So we\u2019re strangers now?<\/p>\n<p>I did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>Another came.<\/p>\n<p>Two years and you can\u2019t even talk to me face-to-face?<\/p>\n<p>I placed the phone upside down.<\/p>\n<p>Harper pushed the dumplings toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I picked up one.<\/p>\n<p>Five minutes later, another email arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>I ignored both.<\/p>\n<p>At eight-thirty, Sarah left.<\/p>\n<p>Harper and I watched a television show neither of us followed.<\/p>\n<p>At nine, my phone rang.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>I declined it.<\/p>\n<p>It rang again.<\/p>\n<p>Same number.<\/p>\n<p>Harper looked at me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnswer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Third call.<\/p>\n<p>Then a voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>I waited.<\/p>\n<p>The transcription appeared automatically.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe, it\u2019s Jessica.<\/p>\n<p>I sat upright.<\/p>\n<p>Harper noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I showed her.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica\u2019s voicemail continued:<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sorry to contact you. I got your number from Sarah.
