6 – Harper Opened Her Door Without Asking Questions, but the Message Liam Sent Before Midnight Proved He Still Thought I Would Return

Harper lived twelve minutes away.

The drive took twenty-five.

My hands shook badly enough that I stayed under the speed limit and let impatient drivers pass.

At the first red light, I realized I had been holding my breath.

I released it slowly.

The city looked ordinary.

People stood outside restaurants.

Cars moved through intersections.

Someone waited at a bus stop holding a grocery bag.

Nothing in the world reflected the fact that I had just ended a two-year relationship.

That seemed both unfair and comforting.

I pulled into Harper’s driveway.

The porch light was already on.

Before I reached the front door, it opened.

Harper stood there barefoot in pajama pants and an old university sweatshirt.

She looked at the bag on my shoulder.

Then at my face.

“Come in.”

That was all.

No questions.

No shocked reaction.

No immediate demand for details.

I stepped inside.

The smell of tomato soup and toasted bread filled the house.

Her dog, Mabel, trotted toward me, tail wagging furiously.

I crouched and buried both hands in her fur.

That was when I started crying.

Not dramatically.

No sobbing.

Tears simply began falling before I realized they had started.

Harper closed the door.

She sat beside me on the floor.

Mabel licked my chin.

I laughed through the tears.

“That’s disgusting.”

Harper handed me the sleeve of her sweatshirt.

“Use this.”

“I’m not wiping dog saliva on felt hollow afterward.

Harper waited.

Finally she asked, “Did you leave?”

“Yes.”

“For tonight?”

“No.”

She adults handle problems.

I stared at the screen.

There was something almost surreal about it.

He had told me to be mature for days.

Now adulthood apparently required remaining physically available until he approved my departure.

Harper handed the phone back.

“Are you going to respond?”

“Not tonight.”

I switched it to silent.

We ate.

Afterward, I carried my bag upstairs.

The guest room had pale green walls and a window overlooking the neighbor’s oak tree.

I unpacked only what I needed for the morning.

Toothbrush.

Work clothes.

Phone charger.

Everything else stayed inside the duffel.

That bothered me.

It made the room feel temporary.

Then I caught myself.

Temporary was not failure.

Temporary was simply not permanent yet.

I changed clothes and returned downstairs.

Harper had poured two glasses of wine.

We sat on the couch.

“Tell me what happened after Jessica arrived.”

I told her.

This
