Work boots. Laptop. Tools. Documents. A box of photographs. My grandmother’s jewelry. Her handwritten recipe book. A chipped ceramic mug Harper had given me in college. Several books. Two framed photographs that mattered enough to keep.

I stared at the list while drinking coffee at the kitchen counter.

Six months in an apartment I had treated as home, and almost everything I considered irreplaceable could fit inside my work van.

That realization should have made me sad.

Instead, it felt useful.

Liam emerged from the bedroom freshly showered and cheerful. Whatever discomfort had existed the night before was apparently over for him.

“Saturday’s going to be great,” he said, opening the refrigerator.

“I’m sure.”

“I was thinking we should move the dining table closer to the wall. More room.”

“Good idea.”

“And maybe get another case of beer.”

“Okay.”

He glanced over his shoulder.

“You’re really fine?”

I took a sip of coffee.

“You asked me to handle it maturely.”

A grin appeared. “I appreciate that.”

He came over, kissed my cheek, and left for work.

The door closed.

I remained at the counter for another minute before opening the hall closet.

My important documents were stored in a plastic folder on the top shelf. Birth certificate. Insurance information. Employment records. A copy of my passport.

I put the folder into my backpack.

Then I stopped.

Moving out after a fight could be dismissed as impulsive. Packing before the fight even happened meant admitting something more difficult: I already knew enough.

The party was not going to decide whether Liam respected me.

It was merely going to show whether I was finally willing to believe the evidence.

I went to work.

Commercial HVAC repair is not glamorous, but I love the honesty of it. A compressor does not call you insecure because you notice it failing. A clogged line does not insist your expectations are unreasonable. Something is working or it is not, and if it is not, you diagnose the problem instead of debating whether the problem has a right to exist.

Around noon, I sat in my van outside a medical office complex with the air-conditioning running and called my bank.

I confirmed that the savings account was mine alone.

Then I checked every shared expense Liam and I had.

There were fewer financial complications than I feared. We had never opened joint accounts. Utilities were mostly in his name. I transferred my portion of the upcoming rent and saved the receipt.

I wanted no argument later that I had abandoned an obligation.

Afterward, I called Harper.

“You sound disturbingly calm,” she said.

“I think I passed angry.”

“What happened?”

I told her.

Not dramatically. I repeated the conversation almost word for word: Jessica was coming. I needed to be mature. If I could not handle it, I could leave.

Harper was silent long enough that I checked whether the call had dropped.

“Harper?”

“I’m choosing my words.”

“That’s new.”

“Chloe.”

“I know.”

“No, I don’t think you do. I just haven’t physically gone yet.”

Her voice softened.

“Then come whenever you’re ready.”

That evening I stopped at home before Liam returned.

I packed my grandmother’s jewelry into a small pouch. The recipe book went into my backpack between two work manuals so its brittle pages would not bend.

I took several changes of clothes.

Not everything.

Enough.

The work van had locked storage compartments built for expensive equipment. I cleared one and placed my personal things inside.

When Liam arrived, I was hanging paper decorations in the living room.

He carried grocery bags and talked for ten minutes without noticing that one shelf in the bedroom closet was nearly empty.

“David confirmed,” he said. “Marcus too. Ben’s bringing his wife.”

“Great.”

“Oh, and Jessica confirmed.”

He made the name sound casual.

“She’s bringing wine.”

“That’s thoughtful.”

He set the groceries down and stared at me.

“What?”

“You’re weirdly calm.”

I tied another length of ribbon around the curtain rod.

“You keep saying that like you’re disappointed.”

“I’m not disappointed.”

“Then what?”

“I just expected…”

He stopped.

“A problem?” I supplied.

He laughed. “Maybe.”

I climbed down from the chair.

“You told me what you expected from me.”

“And?”

“And I listened.”

He seemed pleased by that answer.

Later we ordered takeout and sat on the floor because the dining table was covered in party supplies.

Liam talked about the future.

He wanted a larger television.

Maybe we should replace the couch.

When the lease renewed, perhaps we could look for a townhouse.

“We need more space,” he said. “Especially if we ever have kids.”

I watched him eat noodles directly from the carton.

A week earlier, that sentence would have sent warmth through me.

Now it sounded like someone describing renovations to a building I had already evacuated.

“You’re quiet,” he said.

“Long day.”

He reached across and squeezed my knee.

“You work too hard.”

It was such an ordinary gesture that for a second I almost doubted myself.

This was the dangerous part.

Liam was not cruel every hour of every day. If he had been, leaving would have been simple.

He could be funny. Tender. Thoughtful when thoughtfulness cost him nothing. He brought me coffee on early mornings. He remembered how I liked my eggs. Once, when I had the flu, he stayed home and changed the sheets after I sweated through them.

Those memories were real.

So were the others.

Love did not become healthy simply because the person hurting you occasionally made breakfast.

On Thursday, I moved another bag to the van.

Friday morning, I photographed the apartment.

Not because I expected Liam to destroy anything. I wanted a record of what I was leaving behind and the condition in which I left it.

Friday evening, Sarah came over to help prepare food.

She had known me since college and could detect a lie from the way I held my shoulders.

While Liam went downstairs to collect a delivery, she cornered me beside the refrigerator.

“What’s going on?”

“Nothing.”

“That answer might work on Liam.”

I continued slicing vegetables.

“Jessica’s coming tomorrow.”

Sarah’s knife stopped against the cutting board.

“Jessica Jessica?”

“Yes.”

“And you’re okay with that?”

“I’m not required to be okay with it.”

She studied me.

“What did he say?”

I told her.

Her mouth tightened.

“He actually told you to leave if you couldn’t handle it?”

“Yes.”

“What are you going to do?”

I slid the chopped vegetables into a container.

“Exactly what he suggested.”

Her eyes widened.

Before she could answer, keys rattled outside the door.

“Don’t say anything,” I whispered.

Liam entered carrying two bags of ice.

“What are you two plotting?”

Sarah looked at me.

I smiled.

“Tomorrow’s menu.”

He accepted that immediately.

That night, after Liam fell asleep, I walked through the apartment one final time.

The living room was decorated.

Bottles waited on the kitchen counter.

Serving dishes were stacked beside the stove.

Photographs of Liam and me still stood on the shelves.

To anyone arriving tomorrow, the apartment would look like the home of a happy couple celebrating a new chapter.

Only I knew that my overnight bag was already locked inside my van.

Only I knew Harper had washed the sheets in her guest room.

Only I knew that my grandmother’s jewelry was no longer in the bedroom.

I returned to bed.

Liam shifted in his sleep and placed an arm across my waist.

For a few minutes, I stared at the ceiling while his hand rested against me.

Then I carefully lifted his arm and moved it back to his side.

Saturday morning arrived bright and hot.

Liam woke excited.

By noon, music was playing.

By three, food covered the counters.

At four-thirty, the first guests arrived.

Liam kissed me quickly near the kitchen and whispered, “Remember what we talked about.”

I looked at him.

“I remember every word.”

At five-sixteen, he checked his phone for the fourth time in ten minutes.

At five-twenty, he adjusted his shirt.

At five-twenty-three, the doorbell rang.

Liam’s entire expression changed.

I saw it.

So did Sarah.

He started toward the door.

I stepped in front of him.

“I’ll get it.”

His smile faltered.

I crossed the living room while conversations quieted behind me.

My hand closed around the doorknob.

Whatever happened next, I knew one thing with absolute certainty.

I would not sleep in this apartment again.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Woman at Our Door Wasn’t What I Expected, but Liam’s Reaction to Seeing Her Told Everyone More Than Words Could

By morning, my list contained surprisingly little.
