late.

Missed not having to translate jokes in her head before deciding whether they were funny.

Then life expanded.

She found friends.

Work she cared about.

A small apartment with terrible plumbing and excellent morning light.

She fell in love once.

That ended.

She survived.

By the third year, home had become plural.

That frightened her too.

Julian never used guilt.

Not once.

He called on Sundays.

Sometimes forgot because he was guilty.

Old reflex.

Then she remembered the archive.

Ordinary choices.

Nobody had promised choices would feel clean.

In her fourth year, Julian fell.

He broke his hip.

That changed the equation.

Mara returned immediately.

He protested.

“Your stared.

“That was unfair.”

“Yes.”

“At least you know.”

Julian looked away.

“I don't want you staying because you're scared.”

“I'm allowed to be scared.”

“Yes.”

“You might fall.”

“Yes.”

“You might have overnight.”

He hesitated.

“Probably true.”

Mara leaned forward.

“So what exactly are we arguing about?”

“How long you stay.”

“I don't know yet.”

Julian's frustration rose.

“That means you are letting crisis decide.”

She flinched.

He regretted it immediately.

The family had used that accusation too many ways over too many generations.

“Sorry.”

Mara stood.

“No. Say what you mean.”

Julian sighed.

“I think you're afraid to leave.”

“Of course I am.”

“And I think that fear is making the choice.”

She folded her arms.

“Maybe fear belongs in the decision.”

“Absolutely.”

“Then stop treating it like contamination.”

Julian looked at her.

That was good.

He hated it.

Mara continued.

“You all spent generations asking what people wanted as though desire exists separately from love.”

Julian frowned.

“I don't think that.”

“Sometimes you do.”

“How?”

“You keep asking what I'd choose if I weren't afraid.”

“Yes.”

“What if the truthful answer includes fear?”

Julian sat back.

Mara's voice softened.

“I love you.”

“I know.”

“I don't want you alone.”

“I know.”

“I also like my life there.”

“I know.”

“I resent being here sometimes.”

He closed his eyes.

There.

The difficult truth.

Mara continued.

“And then I feel horrible for resenting it.”

“You shouldn't.”

“Don't decide what I should feel.”

Julian laughed despite himself.

“Fair.”

They sat quietly.

Then he said:

“What do you need?”

She looked at him.

That was different.

Not what do you want?

What do you need?

“I need us to stop treating this like one permanent choice.”

Julian nodded.

“Okay.”

“I need help here.”

“Yes.”

“Actual help. Not me doing everything.”

“Yes.”

“I need to be able to go back for periods without wondering if you're lying about being fine.”

Julian looked offended.

“I rarely lie.”

“You redefine.”

“Different.”

“Exactly.”

He smiled.

They hired home assistance.

Julian hated the first caregiver.

“She rearranges books.”

“She dusts.”

“She moves them.”

They found another.

Her name was Celia.

She argued with Julian about coffee.

He liked her.

Mara returned abroad for six weeks.

Then came home for two.

They built rhythm.

Not perfect.

More honest.

Julian's health declined anyway.

Eventually his cardiologist raised the possibility of a more invasive procedure.

It might improve symptoms.

It carried significant risk.

Mara wanted him to consider it.

Julian did not.

At first.

Then maybe.

Then no again.

Their family had spent generations learning that choices could change.

Still, changing answers were exhausting.

One evening Mara snapped.

“You can't say yes on Monday, no on Wednesday, maybe on Friday, and expect everyone to keep rebuilding the plan.”

Julian stared.

She immediately regretted it.

Then he said:

“Actually, I can.”

Mara laughed in disbelief.

“You're impossible.”

“Capacity includes changing your mind.”

“Technically.”

“No.”

He leaned forward.

“Not technically.”

She quieted.

“This is what everyone forgets.”

“What?”

“People want a clean final answer because uncertainty exhausts them.”

Mara looked down.

Julian continued.

“But I am the one living inside the uncertainty.”

That hurt because it was true.

Mara asked:

“What changes between Monday and Wednesday?”

“Pain.”

“Okay.”

“Fear.”

“Okay.”

“Hope.”

“Okay.”

“Sometimes I wake up thinking another year would be worth almost anything.”

His voice softened.

“Then I have a terrible day and think three months with less suffering sounds better.”

Mara's eyes filled.

“Why don't you tell me that when your answer changes?”

Julian looked at her.

“I didn't know I was allowed to.”

She almost laughed.

“After this family?”

“I know.”

He smiled.

“Ridiculous.”

From then on, they stopped demanding a final answer too early.

Instead, they asked what mattered that day.

Pain.

Breathing.

Independence.

Hospital burden.

Time.

Specific events.

Mara had a birthday approaching.

Julian wanted to be there.

A friend's wedding.

Mara wanted him there but did not use it as pressure.

The cardiologist explained the procedure repeatedly.

Benefits.

Risks.

Alternatives.

No manipulation.

No false certainty.

Julian eventually chose it.

Mara was surprised.

“Why?”

“I want another summer.”

“That simple?”

“No.”

He smiled.

“But that's part of it.”

The surgery succeeded initially.

Julian spent four good months at home.

He walked in the garden.

Complained about Celia's music.

Attended Mara's birthday dinner.

Then complications emerged.

Infection.

Another admission.

Weakness.

By winter, he was worse than before.

Mara hated that.

“If we'd known—”

Julian interrupted.

“We didn't.”

“If you hadn't done it—”

“We don't know.”

“But—”

“No.”

His voice remained gentle.

“Don't turn uncertainty into regret because the outcome disappointed us.”

Mara looked at him.

“You regret it?”

“Some days.”

“Then—”

“Some days I don't.”

He smiled faintly.

“I got the summer.”

That was true.

They had spent mornings outside.

One afternoon he told her stories about Caroline.

Another day they visited the relocated memorial park.

Sarah and Margaret's stones stood together.

Julian had not been there in years.

He sat between them.

“Do you think this is weird?” Mara asked.

“Very.”

“Why come?”

“I wanted to.”

Good enough.

At Sarah's stone, Mara said:

“I read your letter.”

Julian looked at her.

“Talking to graves now?”

“Age catches everyone.”

“You're forty.”

“Ancient.”

They laughed.

Mara rested one hand on the top of the stone.

“I went.”

Julian knew what she meant.

She had taken the job.

Lived.

Returned.

Not because Sarah instructed her.

Because Sarah's shortened life made ordinary choices visible.

They returned home.

By spring, Julian decided against further invasive treatment.

Mara did not argue.

Not because she agreed instantly.

Because they had already done the work.

Questions.

Alternatives.

Fear.

Hope.

Time.

He knew.

She knew.

That did not make it painless.

One night Mara sat beside his bed.

“Do you wish I'd stayed abroad?”

Julian looked confused.

“What?”

“Before all this.”

“No.”

“Do you wish I'd come home sooner?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

He smiled.

“I wish you would stop trying to turn your life into the answer to mine.”

She looked away.

“That sounds like something from the archive.”

“No.”

He reached for her hand.

“That one's mine.”

Mara held on.

For generations, the family had struggled with the difference between staying and keeping.

Now they faced another distinction.

Leaving and abandoning were not the same either.

Mara could return abroad eventually.

Julian could die.

Love would remain true without requiring proximity forever.

That idea hurt.

It also freed them.

Click here to continue reading: PART
