morning.

Most newer notes were soaked.

Ink had dissolved.

Paper stuck together.

Leo's laminated message survived.

So did two older notes.

Miguel spread the rest carefully across a worktable.

He could save some.

Not all.

For an hour, he felt strangely guilty.

Then he remembered the policy.

No requested preservation.

No archive.

He realized his guilt came from the same assumption the family had fought for generations.

That something meaningful must be kept because he believed it mattered.

But the writers had not asked for immortality.

Perhaps they had only needed to write once.

Miguel dried what survived naturally.

He returned those notes.

The rest went into confidential disposal.

The next morning he stood beside the grave.

“Sorry.”

Then he truth.

A shredded surveillance photograph did not restore ignorance.

A discarded drawing did not erase Nora.

A lost note did not undo the choice it represented.

Miguel replaced the box seal.

By the time he retired, fewer than ten notes remained.

He trained Ana Morales to replace him.

She was twenty-seven.

Practical.

Suspicious of traditions nobody could explain.

Miguel liked her immediately.

They walked the property.

Drainage.

Tree thing.”

“What?”

“If somebody's sitting here crying, don't assume they want conversation.”

Ana nodded.

“If they site.

She did not research Sarah for nearly a year.

Then one rainy afternoon, curiosity won.

She read enough.

Not everything.

The waiting room stayed with her.

The idea that an entire family's history might turn on someone checking whether a mother had actually left.

Months later, Ana found a new note.

No signature.

I ASKED MYSELF WHAT I WANTED BEFORE ASKING EVERYONE ELSE.

Ana smiled.

She returned it.

No photograph.

No report.

No archive.

Then she sealed the box.

Around her, the cemetery carried thousands of stories nobody visited anymore.

That did not mean the lives were meaningless.

Only that memory had limits.

Maybe dignity required allowing some things to disappear.

Sarah's box remained because people still used it.

One day, perhaps, they wouldn't.

Ana decided that would be all right too.

Click here to continue reading: PART 24: When Sarah’s
