himself.

Other days he repeated questions.

Forgot appointments.

Put milk in the cupboard.

Nora handled it better than Leo.

Young people sometimes adapted faster because they were less invested in pretending life should remain unchanged.

She labeled drawers in Daniel's apartment.

SOCKS.

MEDICINE.

COFFEE.

KEYS.

Daniel hated the labels.

Then relied on them.

Leo became impatient.

Then guilty about looked at me.

“Good?”

“People who enjoy controlling others usually don't lose sleep over it.”

That helped a little.

Daniel moved into an assisted-living community the following year.

He chose it himself while he could.

That mattered.

His room contained Sarah's lake photograph.

One of Leo at ten holding a baseball glove.

Nora as a baby.

Maya and Leo at their wedding.

And me, though I protested.

“Why am I here?”

Daniel easy.

We played cards.

Walked in the garden.

Daniel complained about the food.

Then names began slipping.

He called Nora Sarah once.

Everyone went still.

Daniel looked frightened.

“I'm sorry.”

Nora took his hand.

“It's okay.”

“No.”

He looked at her face.

“I know who you are.”

“I know.”

“I said the wrong name.”

“That's okay.”

He began crying.

Nora hugged him.

“You can call me Sarah if you need to.”

Leo turned away.

Later, in the parking lot, he broke down.

“He's losing her them.

“And then he'll lose me.”

I touched his arm.

“Maybe names.”

“That take?”

I thought of Daniel asking whether Leo liked baseball.

Daniel sitting outside before pancakes.

Daniel sleeping badly on camping trips.

Daniel crying in a gas station after dropping Leo at college.

“History.”

Leo stared at me.

“What?”

“What he did happened.”

“But if he remember.”

Leo looked down.

“His love doesn't disappear because his brain can no longer retrieve every day of it.”

He wiped his face.

“I want him to know me.”

“I know.”

Some losses could not be argued away.

Months later Daniel stopped recognizing me consistently.

He called me by my sister's name once.

Another time he thought I was a nurse.

Then one afternoon I entered his room and he smiled.

“Sarah's mom.”

I stopped.

“Yes.”

He looked toward the lake photograph.

“She was something.”

“She was.”

“Where's the reunion.

No knowledge of decades.

Only the old fear.

I took Daniel's hand.

“He's okay.”

“Did I find him?”

My throat closed.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“A long time ago.”

Daniel studied me.

“Did he know I wanted him?”

I looked toward the hallway.

Leo stood there.

He had heard everything.

I turned back to Daniel.

“Yes.”

Leo entered.

Daniel looked up.

For a second there was no recognition.

Then something shifted.

“My boy.”

Leo stopped breathing.

Daniel smiled.

“You got big.”

Leo
