And helping her doesn&#39;t mean what happened stopped mattering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what does it mean?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means I don&#39;t want my whole relationship with my sister to be determined by the worst thing she did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo looked unconvinced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould you say that about Grandpa Mercer?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause he never took responsibility. Ruth eventually did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He thought about that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about Dr. Bell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDifferent again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnnoying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth&#39;s treatment changed all of us.<\/p>\n<p>She lost weight.<\/p>\n<p>Then hair.<\/p>\n<p>Then some of the defensiveness she had carried for years.<\/p>\n<p>One afternoon she asked to speak with Leo.<\/p>\n<p>He almost refused.<\/p>\n<p>Then agreed.<\/p>\n<p>I stayed nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth was sitting in my living room wearing a knit cap.<\/p>\n<p>Leo took the chair across from her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI owe you something I never gave your father,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA full apology without explaining myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI returned Daniel&#39;s letter. I told him you were dead. I accepted money from his father. I kept those things from your grandmother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her hands shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told myself I was protecting people. I was also afraid and ashamed. None of that excuses it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou knew Dad was trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd you stopped him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat messed me up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I mean for years I thought maybe he just didn&#39;t want me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face broke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo stood.<\/p>\n<p>I thought he might leave.<\/p>\n<p>Instead he walked to the window.<\/p>\n<p>After a long time he said, \u201cI don&#39;t forgive you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth&#39;s eyes closed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I don&#39;t want you to die thinking I hate you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked up.<\/p>\n<p>Leo kept his back to her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth cried quietly.<\/p>\n<p>He turned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat&#39;s all I can do right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is more than I deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo hated that sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon&#39;t say that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth blinked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause then I&#39;m supposed to tell you what you deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He shoved his hands into his pockets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After she left, Leo sat beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I do it wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause you told the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He leaned against my shoulder like he had when he was ten.<\/p>\n<p>Later that year, Ruth went into remission.<\/p>\n<p>She sent Leo a message.<\/p>\n<p>Just one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you for letting me leave that conversation knowing the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Leo saved it.<\/p>\n<p>College acceptance letters arrived in spring.<\/p>\n<p>Leo got into three schools.<\/p>\n<p>The one he chose offered him a scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel cried when Leo told him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou&#39;re embarrassing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lost ten years.
