The signature resembled mine well enough to fool someone who had seen it only occasionally.<\/p>\n<p>Beneath it was the witness signature.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Adrian Bell.<\/p>\n<p>I remembered him immediately.<\/p>\n<p>For ten years, his face had belonged to one memory: a hospital corridor, fluorescent light, his hand briefly touching my shoulder before he told me Sarah had suffered a catastrophic hemorrhage and could not be saved.<\/p>\n<p>Now his name was attached to a lie.<\/p>\n<p>The forged letter was dated four days after Sarah died.<\/p>\n<p>That afternoon I had been sitting in a funeral home choosing a coffin while newborn Leo slept beside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid your father show you this?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel explained that when he first regained consciousness, his father told him both Sarah and the baby had died. Months later, after Daniel recovered enough to walk with assistance, he insisted on contacting me.<\/p>\n<p>That was when his father changed the story.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted the baby might have survived, then produced the letter supposedly written by me.<\/p>\n<p>I felt my sympathy harden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you knew there was a possibility your son was alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told me you didn&#39;t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn&#39;t know what was true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn&#39;t the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel did not argue.<\/p>\n<p>Then he told me something worse.<\/p>\n<p>Eight months after Sarah died, he came to my house.<\/p>\n<p>He remembered the yellow siding, the white porch railing, the wind chime near the door.<\/p>\n<p>I stared toward my kitchen window.<\/p>\n<p>That wind chime was still there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho answered?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA woman who said she was your sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth.<\/p>\n<p>My stomach turned.<\/p>\n<p>Eight months after Sarah died, Leo had developed a severe chest infection. I spent three nights with him in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth stayed at my house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told me you&#39;d moved,\u201d Daniel said. \u201cShe said you couldn&#39;t stay there after losing Sarah and the baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I put the phone on speaker because my hand had begun shaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told you Leo was dead?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had written afterward anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Twice.<\/p>\n<p>I never received either letter.<\/p>\n<p>He still had the second because it had been returned unopened.<\/p>\n<p>We agreed to meet the following morning after I took Leo to school.<\/p>\n<p>At breakfast Leo studied me over his cereal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs this about that lady?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stopped pretending he hadn&#39;t noticed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe knew your father&#39;s family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His spoon froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid she tell you his name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaniel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo whispered the name once, as though testing how it felt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDoes he know about me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe does now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid he before?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I chose my words carefully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople told him things that weren&#39;t true. I&#39;m still learning what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo looked into his bowl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs he bad?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don&#39;t know him well enough to answer that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After a moment he asked, \u201cIf you see him, ask if he likes baseball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I squeezed his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel was waiting at the diner when I arrived.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized him before he stood.<\/p>\n<p>Leo tilted his head exactly the same way when listening closely.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel had a scar above one eyebrow and used a cane. When he rose, one hand immediately caught the table for balance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can sit,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n<p>He obeyed.<\/p>\n<p>On the table lay photographs, letters, and an envelope bearing my old address.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel pushed a photograph toward me.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah stood beside a lake wearing an old sweatshirt I remembered. Wind had blown her hair across her mouth. She was laughing.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel stood beside her.<\/p>\n<p>They looked painfully young.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took that the day she told me she was pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe looks happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was terrified.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo were you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn&#39;t you come to me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted a plan first. Jobs. Somewhere to live. We thought if we could prove we were responsible, nobody could tell us we were ruining our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe thought she had to earn permission to need me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we both did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He slid the returned envelope across the table.<\/p>\n<p>The handwriting on its front said that I no longer lived at the address.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized the hooked capital letters.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth&#39;s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>Inside was Daniel&#39;s letter.<\/p>\n<p>He had written that he loved Sarah. He didn&#39;t know what I had been told about him. If his son was alive, he wanted to know what he needed to do. He promised to work, to come whenever I permitted, to prove himself by showing up.<\/p>\n<p>At the bottom were his phone number and address.<\/p>\n<p>A path back to him.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth had closed it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI should have kept trying,\u201d Daniel said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He flinched.<\/p>\n<p>I did not apologize.<\/p>\n<p>Then I told him about Leo.<\/p>\n<p>Not the abstract facts. The child.<\/p>\n<p>His missing tooth. His fascination with insects. His terrible jokes. His habit of reading beneath his blanket.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel covered his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>When he recovered, I remembered Leo&#39;s request.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe wants to know whether you like baseball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel laughed through his tears.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#39;m awful at playing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat wasn&#39;t his question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes. I love baseball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By the time we left, I had not forgiven him.<\/p>\n<p>But I believed he deserved to be heard.<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, Leo deserved the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Before any meeting between father and son, however, I needed another answer.<\/p>\n<p>I called Ruth.<\/p>\n<p>She arrived at my house carrying a bag of rolls Leo liked.<\/p>\n<p>Then she saw Daniel behind me.<\/p>\n<p>One roll fell onto the porch.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can explain,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou told him Leo was dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel turned away.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth began crying.<\/p>\n<p>She said she had been protecting me after Sarah&#39;s death.<\/p>\n<p>I stopped her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don&#39;t get to use my grief to excuse what you did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis family frightened me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why didn&#39;t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She looked at Daniel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis father came to see me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel&#39;s grip tightened around his cane.<\/p>\n<p>Ruth said Mr. Mercer told her Daniel was unstable and blamed Sarah for his accident. He knew about our bills, my work schedule, even problems with the house.<\/p>\n<p>Then I remembered money Ruth had given me that winter for a broken furnace.<\/p>\n<p>She had claimed it came from her savings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow much did he give you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her answer barely came out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwelve thousand dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The room went still.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe called it help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd what did you call it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She couldn&#39;t answer.<\/p>\n<p>I placed the forged letter on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you sign my name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHad you seen this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Mercer brought it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Dr. Bell?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ruth looked toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>I stepped between her and it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy is his signature there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was with Mr. Mercer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The doctor had gone to my sister&#39;s home with Daniel&#39;s father.<\/p>\n<p>He had signed as witness to a document he knew I had not signed.<\/p>\n<p>I called his current office.<\/p>\n<p>When his receptionist answered, I left my name, Sarah&#39;s name, and one message.<\/p>\n<p>Tell Dr. Bell I have the letter he witnessed.<\/p>\n<p>He called back eleven minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>His voice was older.<\/p>\n<p>I recognized it instantly.<\/p>\n<p>He suggested there had been some misunderstanding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you see me sign that letter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why is your name on it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He wanted to discuss the matter privately.<\/p>\n<p>I refused to let him control the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually he agreed to meet us that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Before he hung up, I asked one question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid the Mercer family have anything to do with what happened to Sarah?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His answer came too fast.<\/p>\n<p>Afterward I told Ruth to leave.<\/p>\n<p>She asked to see Leo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe needed truth from you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She walked out crying.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel and I were preparing to leave when Evelyn called.<\/p>\n<p>She had found another hidden envelope inside her husband&#39;s cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>This one contained hospital papers.<\/p>\n<p>Among them was a copy of a complaint written by a nurse named Marianne Cole.<\/p>\n<p>The nurse reported that Dr. Bell had been contacted by Daniel&#39;s father while Sarah was in labor.<\/p>\n<p>Then Evelyn read the line that emptied the air from my lungs.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah had repeatedly asked for me.<\/p>\n<p>Someone instructed staff to tell her I had gone home.<\/p>\n<p>Marianne had not trusted the instruction.<\/p>\n<p>She went to check.<\/p>\n<p>I could see the waiting room again: the vending machine, the hard chair, the clock I had stared at for hours.<\/p>\n<p>I had never left.<\/p>\n<p>Evelyn&#39;s voice shook as she read the nurse&#39;s final sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah&#39;s mother was still there.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31141\">Click here to continue reading: PART 3: My Daughter Had Called for Me While I Sat Outside Her Door, and the Doctor Finally Admitted Why I Was Kept Away<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel sent me a photograph of the document while we were still on the phone.
