Babies exist.”

I loved her.

Rome was crowded, loud, and beautiful.

Dad cried inside a church.

Natalie pretended not to notice.

Daniel became obsessed with espresso.

Brooke threatened divorce by day two.

June discovered bread.

I discovered I could travel without checking the bakery every hour.

Mostly.

Maya sent one message daily.

Alive.

Sometimes:

Still alive.

Good enough.

The first three days went almost suspiciously well.

Then came Florence.

The problem started with dinner.

Of course.

We had a reservation for seven.

Brooke wanted to change it to eight because June had finally fallen asleep.

Simple.

Except Natalie had chosen the restaurant.

Not maliciously.

She had researched it.

Booked months earlier.

Requested a specific table.

When Brooke suggested moving the time, Natalie said, “I don’t think they can.”

Brooke replied, “Then you all go.”

Natalie was.

Tiny.

Ordinary.

The old structure trying to breathe again.

Brooke’s shoulders tightened.

Daniel looked at me.

I looked away.

Not mine.

Dad said, “We could call.”

Natalie sighed.

“They won’t hold the table.”

Brooke said, “That’s fine.”

“No, it isn’t.”

Silence.

Natalie heard herself.

I watched her face change.

Old Natalie would have continued.

Explained.

Persuaded.

Made Brooke’s decision into a referendum on effort.

Instead she stopped.

Closed her eyes.

Then said, “Sorry.”

Brooke blinked.

Natalie continued.

“I planned it, so I’m attached to the plan.”

“Yes,” Brooke said laughed.

“I hate this.”

“What?”

“Catching myself.”

I smiled.

“That is probably the point.”

She looked at me.

“I did not ask for commentary.”

Fair.

Dad called the restaurant.

They moved the reservation to eight fifteen.

Problem solved.

We all went.

June woke at seven fifty and spent dinner throwing pieces of bread at Daniel.

No one died.

That should have been the end.

But the trip had other tests.

In Florence, Dad got lost.

Not metaphorically.

Actually.

He walked out of a museum, turned left instead of right, and disappeared into a crowd.

His phone was at fourteen percent.

Natalie panicked.

Immediately.

“We need to split up.”

“No,” Brooke said.

“He could be anywhere.”

Daniel checked location sharing.

“His phone is active.”

Natalie paced.

“We should go.”

I watched.

Her breathing changed.

Faster.

Not anger.

Fear.

This mattered.

“Call him,” I said.

“He’s not answering.”

“Again.”

She did.

No answer.

Dad’s location moved.

Slowly.

Then stopped.

A café.

Daniel said, “He’s stationary.”

Natalie started toward the street.

Brooke grabbed her arm.

“Wait.”

Natalie pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.”

Brooke froze.

Natalie froze too.

The old sharpness had returned.

For a second, everyone went silent.

Then Natalie pressed both hands to her face.

“I’m scared.”

Different sentence.

Not:

Move.

Not:

You don’t understand.

Not:

We need to do what I say.

Just fear.

Brooke’s expression softened.

“We know.”

Natalie breathed.

Daniel called the café.

Somehow.

His Italian was terrible.

A waiter answered.

Dad was there.

Drinking coffee.

Perfectly fine.

He had realized he was lost and decided to stop moving.

When we reached him, Natalie nearly strangled him with a hug.

Then punched his shoulder.

Lightly.

“What?”

Dad looked confused.

“You scared me.”

“I texted.”

“No, you didn’t.”

He checked.

Message unsent.

“No signal.”

Natalie laughed and cried at the same time.

Dad looked at us.

“Was she terrifying?”

“Yes,” Brooke said.

Natalie glared.

Then laughed too.

Again, nothing perfect.

But fear had become speakable.

That changed everything.

The most difficult moment came later, on the coast.

We rented a small villa for three nights.

Separate bedrooms.

Shared kitchen.

Dangerous territory.

The first morning, Natalie woke early and made breakfast.

Eggs.

Fruit.

Coffee.

She arranged everything on the terrace.

Beautiful.

Then Brooke came downstairs and said they had planned to eat in town.

Natalie went still.

I saw it.

Effort.

Disappointment.

Old reflex.

“You didn’t tell me.”

Brooke frowned.

“I thought I did.”

“You didn’t.”

Daniel entered carrying June.

“We mentioned it yesterday.”

Natalie looked at him.

“No, you said you might.”

He opened his mouth.

I could feel the old courtroom forming.

Who said what.

Who was right.

Who owed whom.

Then Natalie looked at the table.

Food for six.

Work done.

Expectation created.

She sat.

“I’m disappointed.”

Brooke nodded.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

Natalie shook her head.

“You don’t have to be sorry.”

Brooke stared.

“I should have been clearer.”

“Maybe.”

Natalie took a breath.

“But I also made breakfast without checking.”

There it was.

Shared responsibility without scorekeeping.

Dad sat down.

“I’ll eat both.”

Everyone looked at him.

“What?”

“I’m committed to peace.”

We laughed.

The tension broke.

We ate a little.

Then went into town.

No ruined day.

No martyrdom.

No later guilt.

The old family would have carried that breakfast for years.

This family carried leftovers.

Progress.

On my unscheduled day, I walked alone along the coast.

No one followed.

No one asked whether I was upset.

That might have been the greatest sign of change.

I was allowed to be alone without it meaning something.

I sat on a low wall overlooking the water.

Thought about Mom.

She would have loved the lemons.

Probably hated the tourists.

I did not imagine what advice she would give.

That was another change.

I no longer needed to turn her into a voice that approved every decision.

She had already given enough.

I sent a photograph of the water to the bakery staff.

Maya replied:

Who authorized this scenery?

I smiled.

Later, Natalie found me back at the villa.

She stood in the doorway.

“Can I come out?”

I laughed.

“It’s a terrace.”

“I’m practicing.”

“Come.”

She sat across from me.

For a while, we watched the water.

Then she said, “I used to think if people changed the plan, it meant they didn’t value the work I put in.”

I looked at her.

“I know.”

“That breakfast thing.”

“Yes.”

“I felt it immediately.”

“What?”

“Like Brooke was rejecting me.”

“But she was choosing breakfast.”

“I know.”

Natalie laughed.

“It sounds stupid out loud.”

“Most patterns do.”

She nodded.

“I thought changing would mean I stopped feeling that.”

“No.”

“What does it mean?”

“You stop treating the feeling like a command.”

Natalie looked at me.

“That sounds like something you learned in therapy.”

“No.”

“Where?”

“Running a bakery.”

She laughed.

Fair.

When we returned to the city ten days later, I realized I had gone the entire trip without needing an escape plan.

I had one.

Separate money.

Separate room.

Flexible ticket.

That mattered.

But I never used it.

Safety had come from options.

Not control.

At the airport, Dad hugged me.

“That was good.”

“It was.”

He looked shocked.

“You admit it.”

“Do not overreact.”

Brooke came next, carrying June.

“Next family trip in five years.”

“Agreed.”

Natalie smiled.

“Ten.”

“Better.”

We laughed.

Then my phone buzzed.

Maya.

I opened the message.

Need you when you land. Not emergency. Important.

My stomach tightened.

I replied:

What happened?

Her answer came quickly.

Simone wants to buy more of the company.

I stared at the screen.

Of course.

Every time life became emotionally stable, business found another way to test whether I actually understood what ownership meant.

Click here to continue reading: PART 36: Northline’s Second Offer Forced Me to Choose Between Control and Scale, While an Unexpected Proposal Made the Decision More Personal

I said yes to Italy.
