But she doesn\u2019t get every room.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooke looked around the greenhouse.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly, she nodded.<\/p>\n<p>At ten thirty, Dad called.<\/p>\n<p>I answered.<\/p>\n<p>His voice sounded different.<\/p>\n<p>Not relieved.<\/p>\n<p>Shaken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have the dress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I exhaled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad took a breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie refused to hand it over at first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe officer told her it belonged to Brooke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said Brooke gave it to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened next?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe started crying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I closed my eyes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t interfere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That mattered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said everyone was attacking her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you interfere?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe officer asked again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe handed it over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Relief moved through me so suddenly my knees weakened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCan you bring it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not bring Natalie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe wants to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s Brooke\u2019s decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I corrected myself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk Brooke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He did.<\/p>\n<p>Brooke took the phone.<\/p>\n<p>I watched her face while Dad spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then she said, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know she\u2019s upset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her voice shook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then stronger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is not invited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel moved closer but did not touch her.<\/p>\n<p>Brooke continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love you. Bring the dress. Come alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then she ended the call.<\/p>\n<p>Her hand trembled.<\/p>\n<p>I reached for it.<\/p>\n<p>She let me.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty minutes later, Dad arrived.<\/p>\n<p>The garment bag hung over one arm.<\/p>\n<p>Brooke stared at it.<\/p>\n<p>He crossed the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She took it.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of them moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad said, \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooke looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor telling myself this was normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her mouth trembled.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor seeing how she treated Claire and assuming you were protected because you were closer to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brooke began crying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hugged her.<\/p>\n<p>This time, neither of them let go quickly.<\/p>\n<p>The restored dress was still clean.<\/p>\n<p>No new stain.<\/p>\n<p>No tear.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing missing.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie had taken it intact.<\/p>\n<p>That somehow made the act worse.<\/p>\n<p>The dress had not been collateral damage.<\/p>\n<p>It had been leverage.<\/p>\n<p>At eleven forty-five, Brooke went into the bridal room.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony started at two.<\/p>\n<p>I expected another crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the next hour moved normally.<\/p>\n<p>Hair.<\/p>\n<p>Makeup.<\/p>\n<p>Flowers.<\/p>\n<p>Music tests.<\/p>\n<p>Maya repaired one cracked sugar leaf.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel misplaced his cuff links.<\/p>\n<p>Vanessa found them in his jacket.<\/p>\n<p>Life.<\/p>\n<p>At one thirty, Dad came to stand beside me near the cake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPolice gave Natalie a warning about the dress incident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s furious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assumed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe says I betrayed her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said, \u201cI think I finally stopped betraying everyone else to keep her calm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was not a triumphant sentence.<\/p>\n<p>It sounded painful.<\/p>\n<p>Good.<\/p>\n<p>Real change usually did.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony began at two fourteen.<\/p>\n<p>Brooke walked down the aisle on Dad\u2019s arm.<\/p>\n<p>The restored dress moved softly around her legs.<\/p>\n<p>The greenhouse light caught the silk.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel cried before she reached him.<\/p>\n<p>I laughed through my own tears.<\/p>\n<p>No one mentioned Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>Not during the vows.<\/p>\n<p>Not during the photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Not when Daniel discovered Baxter.<\/p>\n<p>Not when Brooke cut the cake.<\/p>\n<p>At the reception, Dad stood beside me.<\/p>\n<p>He watched his daughter dance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe looks happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish Natalie could have been here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo do I.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked surprised.<\/p>\n<p>I meant it.<\/p>\n<p>I wished Natalie had been capable of being there.<\/p>\n<p>That was different.<\/p>\n<p>The night ended without disaster.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time in weeks, I felt tired in an ordinary way.<\/p>\n<p>Then, as we loaded equipment into Vanessa\u2019s car, my phone buzzed.<\/p>\n<p>Unknown number.<\/p>\n<p>A voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>I played it.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie\u2019s voice came through low and controlled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou got what you wanted, Claire. You took my husband, my daughter, my family.
