For several seconds, I could only stare at the stain.

The dress was ivory silk.

Minimal beading.

Clean lines.

Brooke had chosen it after rejecting three gowns Natalie preferred.

The red wine spread from the left side of the bodice toward the waist in a dark, uneven fan.

“Where is Brooke?” I asked.

“In my car.”

“Why?”

“She’s trying not to have a panic attack.”

I stripped off my apron.

“Maya, can you finish the sample set?”

“Absolutely.”

I went outside.

Brooke sat in Vanessa’s passenger seat with both hands covering her face.

Daniel stood beside the car.

When he saw me, his jaw tightened.

“What happened?”

Brooke lowered her hands.

Her eyes were swollen.

“It was an accident.”

Daniel looked away.

That told me enough.

“Whose accident?”

Brooke said nothing.

Daniel answered.

“Natalie.”

Vanessa leaned against the car.

I kept my voice calm.

“How?”

Brooke wiped her cheeks.

“We went over to pick up some boxes.”

“What boxes?”

“Wedding things.”

Daniel added, “Place cards. Guest book. Favors.”

Brooke inhaled.

“Mom asked to see the dress one more time.”

My stomach sank.

“You brought it inside?”

“She wanted to check whether her jewelry worked with it.”

Daniel made a frustrated sound.

“She was already drinking.”

Brooke looked at him.

“Daniel.”

“What?”

“You don’t need to make it sound worse.”

He stared at her.

“I’m describing what happened.”

I understood that exchange too well.

Brooke continued.

“Mom held the dress against me. Then we argued.”

“About what?”

“The ceremony.”

Of course.

“She wanted to give a speech.”

Daniel said, “After Brooke said no.”

Brooke nodded.

“She got angry.”

“And the wine?”

Brooke looked toward the bakery window.

“She turned.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“No.”

Brooke closed her eyes.

“Daniel.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“She threw her hand out while she was talking. The glass hit the dress.”

“Did she drop it?”

“No.”

“Did she spill it?”

“She swung her arm while holding it.”

Brooke whispered, “She didn’t mean to hit the dress.”

Daniel’s voice softened.

“I don’t know what she meant.”

That distinction mattered.

I looked at Brooke.

“Did she apologize?”

Brooke nodded.

“Immediately.”

That was different.

“What exactly did she say?”

Brooke frowned.

“Why?”

“Because details matter.”

She thought.

“She said, ‘Oh my God, Brooke, I’m sorry.’ Then she got towels.”

That was an actual apology.

At least initially.

“And after?”

Brooke’s face changed.

“She said I shouldn’t have upset her before the wedding.”

There it was.

Not accountability.

Explanation as transfer.

I rubbed my forehead.

“When is the ceremony?”

“Six days.”

“Have you called the bridal shop?”

“Yes.”

“They said they can assess it tomorrow.”

Vanessa said, “I know a textile restoration specialist.”

Brooke looked up.

“You do?”

“I know everyone.”

That almost produced a smile.

Vanessa continued.

“She handles museum fabrics and high-end formalwear. No promises, but she is very good.”

“Call her.”

“I already did.”

Brooke stared.

“Of course you did.”

“She can see it in an hour.”

Relief crossed Brooke’s face.

Then vanished again.

“This is insane.”

I crouched beside her.

“What do you need?”

“I don’t know.”

“Do you want to go home?”

“No.”

“Do you want Daniel to handle the dress?”

“Maybe.”

“Do you want me to come?”

Brooke looked at me.

“Yes.”

So I went.

The restoration specialist worked in a quiet studio that smelled faintly of steam and fabric.

Her name was Elise.

She examined the dress under bright light.

No gasping.

No false reassurance.

She touched the edge of the stain with a gloved finger.

“What kind of wine?”

“Cabernet,” Daniel said.

Elise nodded.

“Approximately how long ago?”

“Ninety minutes.”

“Was anything applied?”

Brooke told her.

Water.

White cotton towels.

Nothing else.

“Good.”

She looked at us.

“I think I can remove most of it.”

Brooke’s knees almost buckled.

“Most?”

“I will not promise perfect before I begin.”

Vanessa nodded approvingly.

“Correct answer.”

Elise ignored her.

“I need forty-eight hours.”

Brooke swallowed.

“Okay.”

We left the dress.

Outside, Brooke stood on the sidewalk and stared at the building.

“I want to cancel.”

Daniel went still.

“The wedding?”

She nodded.

“Brooke.”

“I can’t do this.”

I stepped closer.

“You don’t have to do anything today.”

“I’m tired.”

Her voice cracked.

“Every choice turns into a war.”

Daniel reached for her hand.

She pulled away, not angrily.

“I don’t mean you.”

“I know.”

“I don’t want the wedding to become a test of whether I can survive Mom.”

That sentence stopped all of us.

Vanessa said, “Then remove her from the equation.”

Brooke looked at her.

“What?”

“Not forever. Not from your life. From the event.”

The suggestion felt enormous.

Brooke’s face went pale.

“You mean uninvite her.”

“I mean decide whether her presence will make the day safer or harder.”

Brooke shook her head.

“I can’t uninvite my mother.”

Vanessa did not argue.

“Then don’t.”

Brooke looked at me.

I knew what she wanted.

Permission.

Not to choose one way.

To choose at all.

“You don’t have to decide for her,” I said.

Tears filled her eyes.

“What would you do?”

I shook my head.

“This has to be yours.”

She looked frustrated.

“That’s not helpful.”

“It is.”

“No, it isn’t.”

“Yes.”

My voice softened.

“Because you’ve spent months being told what you should want. I’m not going to become another person doing that.”

Brooke covered her face.

Daniel wrapped his arms around her.

This time she let him.

That night, Dad came to the bakery.

He looked exhausted.

“I heard about the dress.”

“From Natalie?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“That it was an accident.”

“It probably was.”

Dad looked surprised.

“I wasn’t there.”

“So you believe her?”

“I believe accidents can still happen during bad behavior.”

He nodded slowly.

“That sounds fair.”

I looked at him.

“What happened after?”

Dad hesitated.

“She said Brooke was overreacting.”

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

“She’s scared.”

“Of what?”

“Losing everyone.”

“That fear isn’t making her stop.”

“No.”

Dad looked toward Mom’s photograph.

“Natalie asked me whether I still loved her.”

I did not know what to say.

“What did you tell her?”

“Yes.”

That surprised me.

Dad continued.

“But I told her loving her doesn’t mean I can keep pretending nothing is wrong.”

I nodded.

“She didn’t like that.”

“I assumed.”

He ran a hand over his face.

“We’re starting counseling.”

I stared at him.

“Together?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“After the wedding.”

“That’s probably good.”

“I don’t know if it will work.”

“Neither do I.”

He smiled faintly.

“That was very reassuring.”

“I’m learning boundaries, not optimism.”

He laughed.

For a moment, he looked like my father again.

Not a mediator.

Not a man afraid of his wife’s anger.

Just Dad.

Then his expression became serious.

“Brooke may not invite Natalie.”

“I know.”

“She told you?”

“No.”

“I can see it coming.”

“What do you think?”

He looked down.

“I think she has the right.”

That answer mattered.

“Would you still go?”

He looked at me sharply.

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

I believed him.

The next afternoon, Elise called.

The stain had responded well.

She expected near-complete removal.

I called Brooke.

She cried again.

This time from relief.

Two days before the wedding, she came to the bakery alone.

I was assembling sugar ranunculus.

She sat beside me.

“I decided.”

I kept working.

“Okay.”

“I’m not uninviting Mom.”

My hands paused only briefly.

“Okay.”

“But there are conditions.”

“What kind?”

“She isn’t giving a speech.”

I nodded.

“She isn’t coming into the bridal room while I’m getting ready.”

“Reasonable.”

“She doesn’t get access to vendors.”

“Very reasonable.”

“She does not hold contracts.”

I smiled.

“That should be embroidered somewhere.”

Brooke almost laughed.

“And if she starts something, she leaves.”

“Who enforces that?”

“Daniel’s brother.”

“Smart.”

“He’s six-four.”

“Smarter.”

Brooke watched me shape a flower.

“I know you probably think I’m weak.”

I looked up immediately.

“I don’t.”

“You filed a police report.”

“That was my decision.”

“And I’m still letting her come.”

“That is yours.”

Brooke stared at me.

“You really mean that.”

“Yes.”

She exhaled.

“I kept expecting you to be disappointed.”

“Why?”

“Because you finally stood up to her.”

“So?”

“And I’m doing it differently.”

I set down the flower.

“Brooke, boundaries are not a competition.”

Her eyes filled.

“You don’t have to copy me.”

She nodded.

“I needed to hear that.”

Then she looked at the cake sketch.

“Can I see Baxter?”

I smiled.

I pulled out the tiny sugar dog.

He wore a black bow tie.

Brooke stared.

“Oh no.”

“What?”

“He’s adorable.”

“I know.”

“Daniel is going to be unbearable.”

“Probably.”

She laughed.

For the first time since the venue cancellation, she looked excited about getting married.

Not surviving it.

Getting married.

The following morning, one day before the ceremony, the bakery phone rang.

I answered.

“Claire’s Table.”

A man introduced himself as Detective Harris.

My stomach tightened.

He was following up on the report.

He had spoken with Natalie.

He had also spoken with Dad.

There were inconsistencies.

I stood very still.

“What kind?”

“I’d rather discuss that in person.”

“When?”

“This afternoon, if possible.”

I looked through the bakery window.

Maya was preparing cake boards.

Brooke’s wedding cake stood half-finished in the cooler.

Tomorrow was the wedding.

Today, apparently, the family problem was not waiting.

I agreed to meet.

At the station, Harris placed a printed photograph in front of me.

It was from the morning of Vanessa’s cake.

A still image.

My kitchen.

Natalie beside the worktable.

Her hand extended.

I stared at it.

“Where did you get this?”

Harris looked at me.

“Your father.”

I frowned.

“Dad didn’t record anything.”

“He didn’t.”

Harris tapped the photograph.

“But your home security system did.”

My heart stopped.

We had a camera facing the back hallway.

I had forgotten it could see through the kitchen doorway.

Harris turned his screen toward me.

“There’s video.”
