Less emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I got punished for coping better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The answer hurt because it was honest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou asked more from the person least likely to make your life difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd eventually that became normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at my water glass.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI needed you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou were there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat made it worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His eyes filled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know that too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We sat in silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then Dad reached into his jacket and placed an envelope on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOpen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside was a check.<\/p>\n<p>Four thousand six hundred fifty dollars.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou said you\u2019d cover the damage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVanessa\u2019s cake was salvaged.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what Natalie did still had a cost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pushed the check back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want your money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t meant to buy forgiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m paying because I should have stopped it before it happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at the check.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn\u2019t break it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enabled the environment where she believed she could.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him sharply.<\/p>\n<p>He had clearly thought about that sentence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid Natalie agree?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I almost smiled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m paying it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I pushed the check toward him again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen pay Vanessa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI offered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat did she say?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said the contract was fulfilled.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sounded like Vanessa.<\/p>\n<p>Dad folded his hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen use it toward the bakery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrooke told me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I made a note to discuss information boundaries with Brooke.<\/p>\n<p>Dad continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe said you found a storefront.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found a possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope you take it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words landed softly.<\/p>\n<p>I had expected skepticism.<\/p>\n<p>Questions about risk.<\/p>\n<p>Advice about waiting.<\/p>\n<p>Instead he said, \u201cYour mother would have loved that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My throat tightened.<\/p>\n<p>I looked away.<\/p>\n<p>When I returned home, Natalie was waiting in the living room.<\/p>\n<p>She stood when I entered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I set my purse down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped in behind me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard about your little storefront.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at Brooke, who was sitting halfway up the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>She mouthed, Sorry.<\/p>\n<p>I turned back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat about it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re moving your business out because of one bad morning?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it\u2019s time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou cannot afford commercial rent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s my concern.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have no idea what you\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said, \u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>He did not look away.<\/p>\n<p>Something had shifted between them.<\/p>\n<p>She saw it too.<\/p>\n<p>Then Natalie turned toward me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think Vanessa is going to save you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy father\u2019s money?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mistake?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her face flushed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I picked up my application packet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I walked upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>Behind me, Natalie said nothing.<\/p>\n<p>For once, she did not have an answer.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/insightdrama.com\/?p=31044\">Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Signed Brooke\u2019s Contract Like Any Other Client, and Natalie Realized the Wedding No Longer Belonged to Her Decisions<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The realtor answered on the third ring.
