I carried the emergency kit. Vanessa took several photographs for her event records. Then when I didn\u2019t give it to you, you told her I didn\u2019t care about her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad stepped between us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. It isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie pointed toward the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo protect your expensive cake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I did.<\/p>\n<p>I turned away because Vanessa would return any moment and because my client did not deserve to walk into a family fight.<\/p>\n<p>I entered the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>Behind me, Natalie said, \u201cOne day you\u2019re going to realize money isn\u2019t everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I kept walking.<\/p>\n<p>What happened next took less than ten seconds.<\/p>\n<p>I heard fast footsteps.<\/p>\n<p>Then a scrape.<\/p>\n<p>Then a heavy, wet crash.<\/p>\n<p>I spun around.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie stood beside the worktable.<\/p>\n<p>Her arm was extended.<\/p>\n<p>The cake was falling.<\/p>\n<p>The top tier hit first.<\/p>\n<p>Buttercream exploded across the tile.<\/p>\n<p>The middle tier slid sideways, struck the edge of the table, and collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Sugar roses shattered.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom tier tipped, caught against a chair, and split along one side.<\/p>\n<p>I did not scream.<\/p>\n<p>I could not.<\/p>\n<p>My body simply stopped.<\/p>\n<p>For two days, those tiers had existed in my head before they existed in buttercream.<\/p>\n<p>I knew every flower.<\/p>\n<p>Every support.<\/p>\n<p>Every ounce of filling.<\/p>\n<p>Now pale blue roses were scattered across the floor like pieces of porcelain.<\/p>\n<p>Dad appeared behind Natalie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>She looked directly at me.<\/p>\n<p>And said, \u201cOops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That one word changed something permanent inside me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did that deliberately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI watched you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou turned around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI watched you push the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad moved closer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNatalie?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe if you weren\u2019t so obsessed with money, none of this would have happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>My heart began pounding.<\/p>\n<p>Not from grief.<\/p>\n<p>From disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou destroyed a $4,650 order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou chose a cake over your sister.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis cake belongs to a client.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd Brooke is your family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dad said my name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I turned to him.<\/p>\n<p>His face was pale.<\/p>\n<p>For one second I thought he was finally going to defend me.<\/p>\n<p>Instead he said, \u201cIf you had just agreed to help Brooke, this wouldn\u2019t have gotten this far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I stared at him.<\/p>\n<p>Something inside me went quiet.<\/p>\n<p>Completely quiet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSay that again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m saying everyone made mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaire\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo. She destroyed my client\u2019s property because I refused to work for free, and you\u2019re telling me I caused it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat isn\u2019t what I meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is exactly what you meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Natalie began talking, but I no longer heard her.<\/p>\n<p>I looked down at the cake.<\/p>\n<p>I had perhaps forty-five minutes before Vanessa needed to leave.<\/p>\n<p>The top was destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>The middle might be salvageable.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom\u2014<\/p>\n<p>I crouched.<\/p>\n<p>My hands moved before my mind caught up.<\/p>\n<p>I checked the board.<\/p>\n<p>Still intact.<\/p>\n<p>I checked the dowels.<\/p>\n<p>Most had held.<\/p>\n<p>One side was crushed, but the interior structure remained.<\/p>\n<p>I stood.<\/p>\n<p>I opened the freezer.<\/p>\n<p>Backup sponge.<\/p>\n<p>Two layers.<\/p>\n<p>Not enough for the original design.<\/p>\n<p>Enough for something.<\/p>\n<p>Dad was still talking.<\/p>\n<p>I turned to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stopped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth of you.
