I was scared she would blame me for giving you the mutation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sophie frowned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou didn&#39;t pick your genes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did pick the lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eric looked down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claire felt some of her anger settle into something clearer.<\/p>\n<p>That was the difference.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody chose inheritance.<\/p>\n<p>They chose secrecy.<\/p>\n<p>Bell said Thomas\u2019s files contained something else attached to Eric\u2019s letter.<\/p>\n<p>A reply.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas had written:<\/p>\n<p>There is no safe intervention. Do not let Samuel persuade you otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur stared at the page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTom tried to stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d Bell said.<\/p>\n<p>Claire looked toward the medical transport carrying Thomas.<\/p>\n<p>The man who had just stolen her daughter\u2019s tumor had once tried to protect that same child before birth.<\/p>\n<p>People did not fit into clean categories.<\/p>\n<p>That did not make accountability impossible.<\/p>\n<p>It made it more precise.<\/p>\n<p>Then Eric noticed a handwritten line at the bottom of Thomas\u2019s reply.<\/p>\n<p>Added later.<\/p>\n<p>SHE WAS TREATED ANYWAY.
